Wouldn’t it be easiest to make it so we had to take the test before we could buy a bear tag? That way, a guy can’t have a bear tag without having taken and passed the test.
I think you'd have to make it a required statewide test and not just for specific units then since bear tags are good statewide.

I completely agree with requiring the training to keep hunters from accidentally shooting a grizzly, I've advocated years for this. But, I had missed the part that you must carry proof of passing. How stupid is that, this is the digital age, the endorsement should show on your license. Any warden can easily look at your online profile and check too, or hasn't WDFW figured out how to do that?

One more reason to be disgusted with WDFW, they can't do anything the smart and easy way!  :bash:
I don't disagree with the proof on the license part.

But as far as checking it on the computer, the computers in their trucks are based off cell service. No cell service = a brick in the truck.

Fair enough on checking from the truck. But there's no reason the training couldn't show on your license. I really don't ant to have to carry more junk around, just something else to forget and get in trouble.

So? They do it in Montana don’t they? Seems like the test is easy peasy.

In Montana I think it has to be on your record to buy a bear tag, but you don't have to carry the test results.

That seems easy enough. Im not an it guy but how hard would it be to enter in your wild id#, take the test and have it show on your license when you buy it ? If your not going to hunt those units don't bother with the test If you do take the test the proof is on a document you have with you any way.

when did the training become mandatory?  I may have bought my licenses before the bear test was mandatory, I seen it on there but I think it was voluntary still.  I'm hoping next year it'll be printed on hunting license as an endorsement. Actually, I think they should do that now and give us all a free license reprint showing the bear ID endorsement.  Might be asking too much though, I can't even get a license where the ink shows up for more than a month or two they're so faded already, and they ain't even being getting used yet!

Gonna have to start packing a brief case with me in the woods when I'm huntin

Anyone else having issues finding the test itself? I can find the bear identification program page but can’t seem to find the link to the test. On the right hand side I see the info about the test being available after July 1st but no visible link. Am I missing something?

Is this a new thing?  I don't remember seeing it last year.  Then again, I only get a bear tag just incase I see one while out hunting other things.  This year I plan on trying to actually go after a bear.

Black bear identification test required in GMUs 101, 105, 108, 111, 113, 117, 203, 204, 209, 215, 418, 426. Pg. 70 of regs

You have to pass with an 80% or higher.  I'm not a bear hunter, but I just took mine and passed it with no issues.  You can find it when you sign into the WDFW wild system under Mandatory Species Identification Tests.  Its just 10 questions and only takes a couple minutes.

Last I checked they were requiring the test but took it offline, they must be updating the test?

Not to worry. They'll email when it's back online. :chuckle:

Nah, they'll just close coyote hunting so a wolf won't be accidentally shot.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
