Montana CMR
« on: July 13, 2018, 02:29:57 AM »
Me and 2 buddies are heading over to Montana for our first deer hunt there. Read good and bad things about it. Just would like to know what to expect putting boots on the ground and glassing from higher elevations. Won’t be able to make it over until the hunt so I’m stuck Escouting from the couch. We will be there November 8-16 so we should be right smack down in the middle of the rut I’m hearing.

Also has anyone camped there or is it kind of like a day use area? If we can camp in anyone’s experience would a wall tent be better or we have a 20 foot travel trailer to use.

Its huge and muddy if it rains
deer are there but no slam dunk
somebody from your party needs to go over and look at it
good luck

Most, if not all of the CMR closes before the rest of the state.
Last year it closed to deer hunting 11/15. Just a heads up.

This year it doesn't close early, has the same season as the rest of the state.

Wake up, go find the deer, get close to deer, draw bow back on deer, then miss, then go home and cry.

I think you might be early on the rut. I'm going over  Nov 1 to 10 bucks will be scarred, there may not be many deer this year due to snow my buddy lives down in the bracks and the snow was over his d9 cat. Best advise I can give hunting it is stay on top of the ridges and glass down in the cuts. My buck out of their Last year was a tall 170 4x4 so don shoot the first buck you see.

CMR is a large area. Depends on where you're hunting it. There's an actual campground right along the Missouri River off Hwy 191. Good starting point.

Thanks a lot for everyone’s input on this. Been narrowing it down. Definitely going to be running the ridges and glassing a bunch with binos and spotting scope.

Lots of snow last winter that lasted through April. Plenty of winter kill, if it rains, you're screwed, plan for 70 above and 20 below temps, don't be too picky on a decent buck. That's my advice.

Pretty solid advice right there.
