A good way to sharpen your "ID" skills is to watch all the bow hunting videos of black and grizzly bears. The footage is up close so you get to see the bears in different scenarios and positions.

I don’t see the facial features of a griz on that bear.
Still hard to say.

@jackelope

I’m shooting the first bear you posted.

It’s a black bear. Ears and face are that of a black.

This one has been a challenge to a few buddies. It is not a Washington bear for what it’s worth. I thought for sure it was a grizzly bear but some were not so sure.

This is a massive black, but I'm not pulling the trigger at this point until I watch it for a bit.  The bear is too long, too big of a rear in proportion to the shoulders, and lacks the facial features of a grizz.

This bear would get me excited!

Can a grizzly bear mate with a black bear?

Species and subspecies of bear known to have produced offspring with another bear species or subspecies include brown bears, black bears, grizzly bears and polar bears, all of which are members of the Ursus genus. Bears not included in Ursus, such as the giant panda, are probably unable to produce hybrids.

Since it bares on this subject i checked.Very interesting.

This is the same results I got when I sent this pic out to several buddies. Some insisted it was a grizzly and others were convinced it was a giant black bear. The folks I surveyed were all very experienced hunters who have killed multiple bears and hunt all over the west for the most part. One of those guys said he was sure it was a grizzly and he sent it to a buddy of his who guides brown bear hunts in Alaska. That guy also agreed it was 100% a grizzly.

The good news is we don't have to shoot it until we're sure  :tup:

So I'd glass that a good while before I sent it, and if it ran off before I was sure then so be it.
