Don't have an opportunity to shoot an elk if you don't have a tag. Not many elk in the zone these days... Do a favor and get a wolf tag and kill a wolf while you're here. There's tons of them running around.

Buckmaster, honestly all of the Panhandle units have elk in them but without some serious scouting, I’d say even actually hunting a unit/area for a few years..it’s pretty rough to have a chance at locating them (not knowing feeding, bedding areas, travel patterns, escape routes, etc) and get a shot at an elk.  That’s just my opinion bud.

Would it be worth the time getting a wolf tag and camping over there? Is it that over run?

There are alot of them around for sure, finding one is a whole nother story. I spend about 2 months a year in the area and have yet to see one in person. have had several on my cams but never in real, life

There are quite a few in that area. Have run across them on a few occasions

The best way to insure that you see a nice bull is to not have a tag in your pocket. Just saying!

Fyi wolf tags are cheap for non residents...worth the money just incase....I hunt the elk city area for deer and have yet to see any elk or wolf but have listened to them howl and they got ahold of my kids deer within 45 min if the shot, I heard them run off when we walked up to it..I've seen lots of fresh elk sign also just no visuals yet

$35 wolf tag is cheap insurance - its hard not to shoot one given the chance and you don't want to be caught "poaching" a wolf - the wrong judge would throw the book at you.

Seen a couple around Elk City.

Heading out Saturday to scout - hope something is talking !  ( NOT wolves )

I guess I was in the minority, I was their for 4 days last deer season and saw elk everyday and almost got a wolf. But it was in the wide open and from the road I wasn't expecting it and couldn't set up quite quick enough for a shot  :bash:

If you stay down low you might have a chance. I was up high last year and never seen an elk track then we dropped down to 10a where it boarders 10 & 12 and there was a lot more animals. Where did you plan on hunting deer in unit 10?

Just got back from a week hunt in the Lolo Zone. Saw one spike, no fresh tracks. One pile of fresh Pooh in about 50 miles hiked (per my gps). we changed locations twice and never even saw any fresh sign or even a rub for that matter.. and we hunted it hard man!! We did see 3 moose though and that was neat! Good luck out there! It’s a tough hunt! We actually left early and are gonna hit the opener here in WA tomorrow for the next week..

I'm rolling out my new motto for Idaho elk hunting and it is go where the wolves aren't. I tend to see elk and fresh elk sign in areas where I don't see/hear wolves and come across wolf crap.

Problem with unit 10 is how many wolves there are and that they've figured out the elk hinding spots too so the elk are constantly on the move.
