To my knowledge all of Montana is drawing only for non residents as far deer go. I’m sure there is exceptions. That being said the draw odds for non residents is better than most. Speedy but the price is well worth it. I prefer to hut less popular areas of western Montana as I’m a sucker for the high country muleys. That being said a lot of people are more apt to venture to eastern Montana where deer numbers are very good and a more open country better suited for glassing and spot and stock. Idaho also lands in some very similar turf at a much cheaper expense. I’ve hunted both with success.

This is the 1st year I didn’t get drawn for MT sense 2000. Been hunting there sence 1996. The east side is real good for good muly’s. Been all over the state and found the Fort Peck area to be the best. 24 -26” are no problem if you get away from the road

Plenty of public ground available?

Fort Peck area is where I am thinking about if I get drawn. Drove through that area while antelope hunting and looks cool. Looks like  Lots of areas to get away from the roads.

Idaho

Hahahaha.... have fun with all the damn people out here now. The hunting in Idaho has gone downhill dramatically compared to a few years ago. And be ready to go waaay back in, or deal with the crowds.

I’m putting in for Montana this year. If I don’t get drawn I will go back to Idaho and hunt a spot close to Stanley. Always killed bucks in Idaho. Bow hunting AZ sounds like it would be interesting?

I deer hunted Idaho this year and my buddies and I never had a problem finding a spot to ourselves even near roads. Did we see other hunters? Some days there would be quite a few. Other days we'd hardly see any.  But everyone spread out and we never felt crowded. In the late muzzleloader season, we'd rarely see more than three or four other rigs in a day.

Don't know where you are, but 39 during rifle... not worth it to me anymore.

Our spot is about 3 miles up hill from the closest road. There are horse camps but not many people walk back there. Would it be wolfs? It has been 15 years sense I have been there, so maybe it has changed a lot?

Alaska

Lots of options in SE AK, Prince William Sound, or Kodiak. You ever seen a deer stare at another deer that you just dropped? Kodiak. Wanna hunt em in velvet while camped at the top of the world? hunt SE. Ain't cheap as it used to be but you'll see deer for sure.

39 is the most heavily hunted unit of not only ID but any western state for that matter.
