Looking for a new hunting dog

I lost my red setter this year and am finally ready to start looking for a new dog. I mainly hunt grouse, chukar, quail, rabbits and ducks. Thinking about a flusher this time. I sure enjoyed my english springer. But open to about any breed. Never trained a dog before but I am not in a financial position to pay for a trainer this time. So a dog that is easier to train then high drive setter that I got last time. Anyways hoping for suggestions for breeds and breeders. Open to started or finish dogs.

Based on the description of what you like to hunt I think it would be difficult not to consider one of the longer haired German breeds. However Springers are awesome little hunting dogs! My first dog was a very driven Springer that was hell on the birds! Good luck in your quest.

A lab sounds good as well since I see what my buddy can do with his. Your right cant go wrong with a lab never meet one I didnt like. I will keep it in mind.

Never thought of a golden retriever as a versatile hunter such a pretty lover of a dog. I will give them a call and find out more about the breed.

German Wire hairs I have read about but not had much experience around them. I have heard they are sharp and not good around small pets and kids. But will research that option as well.

I know a few buddies that have dogs from Lee at WRL's they have all been healthy and great hunting dogs, although the amount of training varied greatly they all had good drive and strong noses.

Tim and Julie Higgins at Skookum Creek Retrievers also has a litter of nice labs due any day. You might take a look there as well if your looking for a lab.

Whatever dog you end up with make sure you are buying dogs that are health checked and from strong lines. The cheapest part of a dog is the initial cost but that decision will effect your future with that dog the most. Just my 2 cents!

I agree, if you want a hunting that is inclined to do what you want it do, breeding is very important.  An excellent trainer can polish a turd, but only so much.  The rest of us non professional trainers greatly benefit from good breeding.  My dog constantly amazes me as to his natural inclinations and makes up for my failures as trainer.  Just never seems to be enough time to get it all in!  : )

Check out the chapters in this book on breeding.  I think that while Bob is a versatile gun dog guy, his info and advice on breeding should be the gospel for ANY breeder.

Best all around hunting dog is a Lab. I have owned or hunted behind them all and keep coming back to the Lab for best all around huntwr and temperment.

Well I think I have settled on a Pudelpointer. After watching a bunch of videos of them hunting and reading about them seems like the best fit for me. I have also decided that it must be a puppy so hopefully it wont be so inclined to run off and go hunting by its self. Labs were a big consideration but I really enjoy watching a pointer lock up.  I think I will be able to do it all with a pudelpointer. Now onto finding a reputable breeder, Cabin Creek was great to talk to. But I will check them all out before making a decision. Any suggestions welcome
