Does anyone know WHY you can't hunt coyote with dogs?
« on: November 20, 2018, 06:28:09 PM »
I'm very new to all this. And there are things that just don't make sense to me about some of our regulations. Two burning questions I have--why NOT coyote with dogs considering how rampant they are and no bag limit, etc. And if anyone knows (even though this is not the right section) WHY can't you trap rabbit??

I didn’t know people used dogs for coyotes.? My first thought is was there ever a tradition/hunters who regular used that method in this state?

I would be happy if we could use decoy dogs (tolling) for yotes.

I-655 didn't cover using hounds to hunt coyotes, that's a WDFW policy decision.

https://wdfw.wa.gov/help/questions/17/Do+I+need+a+hunting+license+to+hunt+coyotes+in+Washington%3F+
Do I need a hunting license to hunt coyotes in Washington?
In order to hunt coyotes in Washington State, a valid small game or big game hunting license is required (RCW 77.32.010). Coyotes are unclassified wildife and are not regulated by WDFW. Since they are unclassified, any weapon may be used to hunt them. There is no bag limit and coyotes can be hunted year round.

Hunting or pursuing coyotes with dogs is prohibited.

Coyotes may be hunted at night EXCEPT during the months of September, October, or November in any area open to a centerfire rifle deer or elk season.

A few years back they deemed it (socially unacceptable). What ever the heck that means. I used to have a Catahoula Cur mix that i used as a decoy dog and it broke my heart when I had to turn him into a lap dog. I have a purebred Catahoula female now and I sure wish I could put her to work, They make a great decoy dog.I can understand using them as a chase dog, BUT a decoy dog has nothing to do with them harming a coyote . Its more Washington state B.S.  It pisses me off that i cannot take the dog calling with me as I can no longer hear rattle snakes.Maybe I could just say she is a service dog  8)

How I understand it is you can't chase coyotes with dogs such as you would bears or cats. As far as being able to send a trained dog out 50yds or so & call it back, at that point are you hunting with a dog? As long as the dog does not pursue the coyote. I would try it, but as soon as my dog saw a coyote the fight would be on

It was legal in 2008 but not by 2010. I'll try to narrow it down further.

2008: Coyote: Statewide, open year round. If hounds are used, season is:      Sept. , 2008 - Mar. 15, 2009    (Except year round with hounds in Adams,     Benton, Franklin, & Grant counties) .

Lord, those are fast dogs.   What breed are they?
greyhounds, roach backed confirmation and deep chests make for fast and  endurance. One dog looked like it had some saluki in it , also a sight hound. I've got a coworker who is from Kansas he said they used to have a great time chasing coyotes with dogs.

I would have thought that greyhounds couldn't hack the cold of the plains, but I must be wrong.   I see them covered in sweaters at dog-park in October, must just be dog helicopter soccer moms worrying too much.

Because this state if full of soy eating twerps. I haven't seen them making any logical decisions for a while.

I have hunted jackals in Europe with hounds and pretty sure it'd be the same thing with coyotes.
