So does that mean 21 years of trying?
Slif I started in 2019 I'd be 56 by the time I reached 21 points.

I think I got into this sport too late in life. Horrible thing when a father abandons a family and breaks the chain of hunters, he takes all the experience and heritage with him when he walks out the door. Leaves the son with no role model or tuotor. Starting from nothing is like climbing a mountain blindfolded.

Starting at the bottom means just that. It’s all up hill so there’s no bad things to hold you back. If you want it you can get it. But you have to WANT it to get it

Oh I want it. This is my number one pursuit in life. Family first, then hunting. I want it bad and I'll do whatever it takes.

Just go hunt otc or put in for decent tags.  You’ll get old fast waiting for the BEST tag, trust me.

OTC is terrible. Horrible experience competing with 1,000,000 other orange vests for 5 elk.

I don't have any experience with giant elk other than what I've heard second hand so I won't offer any unit advice but if you want 360 go for 360 and don't let a bunch of dudes on the internet talk you out of it. You can go in with open eyes about realistic draw odds but you read half the posts on here and think there isn't a game animal left in the state. If not for hunter error most my OTC tags would have tirned out pretty well in this state so it's not a bad fall back plan to join the masses and chase elk general if you don't draw your dream tag. Oddly enough I've only ever been drawn when I entered.

Hah! Thanks for the morning laugh. I'll be entering from now on, that's for sure. I just got into this sport late so it's a bit daunting to hear guys talking about 21 years of entries with no draws. I was talking to my family about this yesterday: I think my main issue is I've been focused on success (for any species) in the 1-5 year timeframe, and my experience is showing me that's foolish. I am going to start focusing on success in the 5-30 year timeframe, as that's likely more realistic for landing a deer or elk. I'll check in once I turn 65 if I haven't yet killed anything.

Don't have to hunt modern for elk. I've seen that you've been learning bow hunting from other posts on the site. September with a bow is pretty fun. A two mile hike in this last year every morning got me away from 99% of other people.

Correct, trying to move to bow, though the feedback I've received from this forum is that I am an idiot for attempting bow for my first kill on something. I am questioning if it was wise to attempt archery this year. Everyone I talk to is saying:
1. Don't use a bow, go modern
2. Don't hunt blacktails, hunt muleys
3. Don't hunt WA, get out of state

Just don't hunt during my season or anywhere near my area. I hunt when and where the animals arent so don't follow my lead!

Hunt in the manner that affords you the most time in the woods. There's no better way to improve your hunting skills like archery and it allows you weeks if not months more of hunting than any other mode.

Plus you can reuse arrows so it's cheaper to practice shooting.
