Elk North of Ellensburg??
« on: January 01, 2019, 12:35:10 PM »
Hey guys,
I posted in another thread, but I thought I’d put it here too.
Does anyone know if there are any elk in the canyons North of Ellensburg? I want to work on improving my photography skills during this off season and was just curious of that area.. thanks kindly!

Depending on how close to Ellensburg you're talking about.Blewett Pass has some.I have seen a lot of 6x6 and bigger bulls while grouse hunting in the fall.I see lots of cows calving on the old blewett pass hywy during mushrooming in the spring, too.I seen lots of elk in the Esmeralda basin,Ingalls tail and the Teanaway river valley has good numbers at times.Indian Creek was my old stomping grounds for elk, grouse and mushrooms before the wolves.I don't know if I would go hunting with my dogs for grouse now.GL

Try the wildlife refuges.  Closed to motorized vehicles but you could hike in. Depending on the weather and how far you can hike, could see a lot.

Are you talking the canyons like Recer Creek, Coleman, Cooke, Shenebly? All of them routinely have elk. It's rare if I don't see some cows or a herd up there. Probably every other time or one out of three times I'll run into a big bull. Now the tricky part is finding those damn true spikes when there are forty-nine other people hunting around you.
My freezer is full of stories and memories!....said no hunter ever.
