Toyota 4 runner vs Chevy Tahoe

Will be buying a used, but late model family rig here in a few months and have it narrowed down to these 2. Other the obvious size difference, does anyone have experience or thoughts on these?
 Family of 4. Will see snow and occasional mountain roads, but mostly payment.

I think your going to have way better reliability with the 4Runner if your buying used man. Go with Toyota! You won’t regret it

Toyota not even a a question in my mind! We have an 04 highlander with 175k and I have never done anything to it but changed the oil. Runs like a dream! All my chevys I have owned have had major issues. Gas chevys that is. I hear the diesels are pretty great

You should expect 300k miles out of the Chev, that's what I got out of the last three I have had before I sold them.  The Tahoe will have much more room, towing capacity and general utility with a bit less mileage. 

Personally, I would jump to the Suburban for the best utility unless you live in a city and are cramped for parking space.

If you are going on road trips, hauling stuff, camping or hunting in it or ever need to pull anything it isn't much of a choice.

Consumer Reports and you won't buy a Tahoe or Suburban.  Toyota all day long.  Sequoia or Land Cruiser if you want size bigger than 4 runner.

Yeah, I had a 1993, 2000, another 2000 and a 2004.  All bought used and I did any maintenance.

The Chevy engines run well and have cheap parts that are easy to work on.  The transmissions have more limitations if you tow heavy stuff, but are fine for reasonable 1/2 to loads.

Look on Craigslist, more Suburbans with over 200k than you can shake a stick at.

My brother runs them as well as my dad.  No major issues knock on wood.  They are workhorses and reasonably priced unless you want a new one.

I don’t have experience with Toyota’s, never saw the need to pay more for less.

If your not towing, Toyota all day, everyday. Can cost more, but a much nicer rig for what you’ve described

 We have a 2001 4runner that has treated us extremely well. 240,000 miles. We will be getting a new one in the next month or so. I'll be keeping the '01 for a commuter. Toyota has the best rep for a reason.

Have a 2013 Tacoma and and 2017 4runner

the Tacoma tows anything I have
18ft Duckworth
20ft LW Travel trailer
Both have 4.0 motors and tow packages

Completely different rigs. if you need the space and the power of the 5.3 get the Tahoe (and there definitely 200k mile rigs). If you can afford to go smaller get the 4runner

You didn’t specify what model years you were considering or what you want to do with it so here’s my take.

I’ve had a suburban & it was a great rig but it was a 2000/1st gen 5.3. Got rid of it with 150,000 on it with no major maintenance. The gen2 5.3’s from like 07-11 has issues & blew up long before their time. I think the newer ones are better but don’t hold me to that. If you want more room with a great ride then a Tahoe or suburban is the way to go but definitely do your homework & realize it probably won’t go as many miles trouble free & will have crappy resale value when your done with it.

I currently have a 12 Toyota Tundra, my boy has a 17 Tacoma & buddy has a 11 Tacoma & a 14 4Runner. I can report 0 major issues with any of them. I’ve road in the 4Runner a few times,which is a limited, and it’s a nice rig but they are smaller. The 3rd row seating is not for older kids or adults so it don’t compare to a Tahoe/suburban on that front. Reliability is no contest as is resale. A sequoia would be the equivalent of a Tahoe but it will cost ya more & are gas hogs even tho it will destroy a 5.3 Tahoe in the power department.

 If it suits your needs for hauling kids,cargo& towing then I would say get the 4Runner but if not do your homework on GM’s reliability in the model years your lookin at & get bigger.

Thanks. I've had several Chevy/GMC trucks. Last one was a 2010 seira HD. I liked them, but started having issues when miles got past 100k. Ive also had/have Tacoma's. Right now have a 06 doublecab taco. They are not fancy, but bullet proof.
Thats how I narrowed it down to those 2.
Currently have a 2010 limited cherokee with the hemi for the family car. Man is it a POS! breaks down all the time!
When I say we will get used, but late model, I mean 16 or newer or w/ less than 30k on odometer.
After this stupid jeep that may have been cursed by a witch doctor, I want something dependable and will last a long time.
3rd seat would be a plus since our kids are still small. 3 & 5.

I’d go Toyota all day.
I realize these aren’t all in the same category but my family/ I have owned-
‘94 corolla
‘01 Camry
‘08 rav4
‘12 Corolla
‘15 Camry

Other than body work from collisions,(none of which were me  ) knock on wood, no repairs have been necessary for any of the vehicles outside of the usual battery/tires/ filters etc over time.

Like others have said though if you can find a model of the Tahoe that has been proven to be a good model year without major issues over time, and you need the towing/ size then that would be a better option.

Also know several ppl with 4runners new and old and all I’ve heard is awesome things

Toyota. I've been sold on them for years despite my best efforts to fight against buying a "foreign" car company vehicle. Ive owned/drove A camery, 2 tacomas and currently own a tundra. Great vehicles. Actually the 4runner is the one truck I would trade my Tundra in for.
