when is it ok to leave a puppy outside all day?
« on: March 30, 2009, 12:56:46 PM »
my gsp is 3 months old now and has been left outside for a few hours at a time, but i am not too sure about leaving him all day yet.
is it warm enough in spokane now or should i wait?
he has a dog house that he can go inside, he doesnt like it yet but i think he will later on, or if there is nowhere else to go.

I have a 6 month old lab pup that spent everyday during the winter outside in her kennel, and when I got home from work she was inside the house with me...  Had her dog house stuffed with lot's of grass hay, and that kept her plenty warm.

I know lots of hound puppies that never go inside.  As long as they are able to get out of the wind they are just fine outside.  Dry bedding is a big plus.

As long as it isn't a bulldog that costs more than your truck, all of the above applies. 8)

well, he was outside for most of the day today... he had to go inside after my dad had to pick him up at the neighbors house :'(
he was fine when my dad checked in on him at noon until 130. i think the storm might have scared him and he tried to get away from it. he has a dog house and plenty of toys out there. have to look real good at the fence now.

GSP's get cold real easy........you will need to make sure that he a lot of warm blankets in his dog house and that he can't wander off looking for some place warmer.  You can built a fenced in area with T-posts and hog wire fairly inexpesive.

I had a fully fenced in yard with 4' high chain link but I built another area for my lab pup out of T-posts and hog wire so that he couldn't slip under portions of the chain link since he was so small at 9 wks.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

My lab lives outside.  I would say that it is OK as long as you don't have anything outside that you value that can't stand a good chewing... :chuckle:

If they have somewhere dry under cover enclosed is better ( like your dog house) to stay out of the weather and access to water they should be perfectly fine.  If they can have access to food that will help keep them that much warmer.  Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Mine has taken up landscaping and demolition when she is outside more than 4 or 5 hours at a time.

I wouldn't leave it outside all day at 3 months. I believe at 6mos. is when they can regulate their own body temp. They really don't have the coat for cold weather and the nights have been cold. Sounds like he knows how to get out too so, I would find another plan.

My cousins have over $6000 dolars into their bulldog and it is only two. They bought it from a breeder over the internet, tons of medical issues.

its hard to find good bred dogs anymore everyone thinks they can backyard breed... i say leave that to the people who really KNOW the breed and focus their lives on that and reproducing for the quality of the breed not the quantity
