Mt View Application Numbers
« on: October 04, 2019, 11:10:39 AM »
For those that were curious or have/had a vested interest :)
To rehash an old thread/debate....2019 application summaries are out. I dunno if anyone heard but da MeatEater crew shot a big old bull in the Mountain View unit and then spoke openly about the locations/trails/etc.

        2018 Apps  2019 Apps  % increase
Rifle         428            489           14.3
Archery    114            188           64.9
Muzzy        59            145         145.9
Total         601           822           36.8
It is hard to follow one great vision in a world of darkness and of many changing shadows. Among these shadows men get lost.

Yup, increases across the board. A bit surprised that the Muzzy apps skyrocketed and not archery.

What do the rest of the blues units look like? Is there a correlation between tag decreases in Yakima GMU's as well as the continued decrease in elk numbers in other units such as Dayton that are moving apps around? So basically applicants jumping ship on normal choices and applying elsewhere?
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

Trying to find the old thread as we speak, I’m trying to refresh myself on what the wager was but I think I may have lost  :chuckle:

This is a legit question.

i'd say this contributed more than the rinella effect.
look at the bull tag number drops for observatory and the like.
those would be interesting numbers to look at from 18-19

It is. I'd think that the Quality elk apps would be largely independent of the Yakima Herd effect as most of those hunts, the rifle ones, are Bull hunts and not quality hunts.
I'm not gonna break down every hunt. This is more just for the wagers waged...I know there were a few :)

Here is data from the 2019-2020 regulations pamphlet showing applications in 2018, and 2019 application data from this site: https://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/special-hunts/results/elk#

I'm not sure if the data comes from the same sources but it should be representative.

this is prob a rediculos question but i gotta ask and clear it up.  so there were 713 differnet individuals in the watershed applicaiton pool?  now square those peopla  lot, some more than others and that is the total number of names in the hat?  so lets say all watershed applications had 3 points so is that 713x713x713? for total names in the hat?

NO

You can get a total number of applicants using the more detailed report from WDFW on how many applicants there were with how many points.  Mr. Mykiss might calculate for you...

It's going to be difficult to quantify how much of that huge increase is from the publicity and how much was due to tag reductions because it's possible both of those things worked together. "my unit has way less tags...I heard its good over here..."

I got beat up a bit last year for my opinion on this, but I think this is completely to be expected when a hunting celebrity does what Rinella did. I'm glad he apologized and regrets it.

All that said, does anyone know if that podcast is still up with the original information? With the upcoming video release of that hunt I hope they delete the podcast or have someone bleep out the specifics. It would take less than an hour of work to edit it and even less time to pull it.
what in the wild wild world of sports???

I think the unit got more publicity from people on this website than Rinella, but that definitely added to it.

All a person has to do is Google "mountain view elk" guess where that leads...

713 averaging 10 points = 71300 names in the hat
