Reeds are cheap! Wear some out, you'd be surprised how quickly it becomes natural 

Still prefer old Sceery howler for open country locations but nothing gives control like mouth reeds

The whole MFK team does awesome. Best coyote hunting videos are those guys calling coyotes in to shotgun range with barks and howls. Jason has some really good instructional videos too. I’ve howled in a few now and my locator howls are way better thanks to those guys videos.

so ive ordered the howler combo pack with amp horn from MFK, and got on allpredatorcalls and ordered a set of 3 yote diaphragms from FoxPro, and a 2 diaphragm set with a dvd and amp horn from primos.  so ive got 8 reeds coming to play with, a dvd, and I found some good instructional stuff from mfk online that ill watch later.  really want to get this vocalization stuff figured out.  having the instant success with it my first attempt last month made me think it was going to be a piece of cake, but ive thrown nothin but airballs since.  guess I havent been saying the right things.  hopefully with a bit of practice and watching some videos ill be halfway on top of things before too damn long, I think once theyre denned up with pups is when they ought to get really responsive to coyote vocalizations.

I have his horn howler, several other calls too from RR and they're all great 


but we're talking about diaphragms, RR doesn't make diaphragms far as I know,  which are a ton more difficult to master.   
I can barely make a decent cow elk with a diaphragm and do a sucky bull elk bugle.   

I do "ok" turkey I think...turkey guys would so no 


but making coyote howls, yips, barks and such is going to be even harder yet, at the realism we're talking about here!

What I don't know is how much more effective added realism will be?

I have to agree .
The old Fox pro has made many coyotes call shy .20 years ago you could blow a distress call and have almost instant response.Not so much any more.Just like elk that are call shy .

I have a few nice open reed howlers.  think I have both howlers and distress calls from both bearmanric and rainshadow.  but I want to learn diaphragms too.  want to be versatile.  coyotes are open 365 with no bag limit, its something I really haven't taken advantage of yet, but I intend to.  need to step it up.  learn vocalizations.  hunt more. way more. pretty excited to try out the ar / reflex sight combo.

 I started the same way with diaphragms, tried them all, now I just order 3 types, MFK MOFO, Blackout and pup distress. They have been the best for me, I also carry a amp horn that Rick Robins made for me. I've tried others diaphragms because MFK are kind of pricey but I keep going back. I trim mine to fit my mouth better. Good luck, there is nothing like producing your own vocals and having a pack of coyotes screaming back at you.

Anybody else here call predators at night?  Im about to give it a go tomorrow.  Probably mostly focus on coyote vocalizations, see how that goes.  Id like to do distress calls, especially to up my odds of a bobcat (im in 121, still open to night hunting bobs,) but not using an ecaller i think distress calling in the pitch dark may be a little spooky.  Something about using lung powered distress in the dark with lions and wolves around, just a little creepy.  Guess ill just have to give it a go.  Wont be using thermal or night vision.  Head mounted red spotlight from wicked lights to scan, and a green scope mounted spotlight from coyote light for the shot.  Ive been getting no action here lately, havent even heard a coyote howl for the last 2 weeks.  Im hoping that howling and calling in the dark will push the odds in my favor just enough to end my slump.

You using nightvision for your scope, or just night vision for scanning, with a kill light on a regular scope?

I have a weapon mountable thermal scope.  Has zoom, reticles etc.  But i only ever use it as a handheld to scan around at night once in a while, see whats moving.  In a situation where id be using it as a rifle scope it would probably be good, but it takes a few seconds to turn on, then change brightness, black hot / white hot etc.  So in a calling situation i just dont know, think im better off with the scope mounted light.  I think the only real good application for my thermal scope would be longer range stuff, slower paced stuff, like watching a cow carcass in a field, something along those lines.  Just dont see it being efficient calling in the woods.

Basically all of the youtube videos, all of the information in predator forums etc about night calling are all focused on calling in areas of wide open spaces, devoid of the big predators.  And theyre all using ecallers, often shooting from a vehicle.  Ive just never heard of anybody doing the night hunting thing out here in the mountains.  But somebody has to be doing it i would think.
