I was taught by a drivers ed teacher who was also a WWII bomber pilot, "never swerve to miss an animal, you are more likely to be hurt or killed in the process, HIT the animal whatever it is!"

My scoutmaster swerved to miss a porcupine, rolled his car and wound up in the hospital for ten days.  Almost killed him,  once he recovered he told my dad, "yep, should have HIT it and kept on going, I'll never try and avoid HITTING another animal again!"

A little advice if you find yourself driving in Alaska, avoid hitting a moose at all cost! That being said, don't post dead wolf pictures on the internet with headings that say you're glad the wolf is dead. It gives the other side emotional ammunition
for people on the fence. Big lose for hunters.  :twocents:

never swerve ?  good advice I get if you are driving a Peterbilt...try it in a chevy aveo when an elk steps out in the road and you can literally see underneath its belly.  Would be awesome to be able to afford driving one back and forth 92 miles every day

When I met my wife, I told her to never swerve to avoid an animal. I did this after she nearly ran us off the road to avoid hitting a stupid dog. I said it over and over again. It was finally ingrained in her thinking and a few years after that, she hit and killed two dumb dogs in a short period of time (dog owners' fault since there is a leash law in the whole county). She later hit a black bear which freaked her out. Then one day, she watched one of our neighbors swerve to miss a dog and the neighbor went straight into oncoming traffic and it instantly killed our neighbor and injured the driver in the other car. My wife came home and said to me 'now I know why you say to never swerve to avoid an animal'.
She told me how sad it was to witness the death of our neighbor lady.
