Help! WDFW Only showing out of state license prices
« on: March 31, 2020, 07:05:53 PM »
This is my first time buying a license in Washington. I've lived here since 2017 though, so I had better be considered a Washingtonian. Anyways, I completed my hunters education course and virtual course this weekend and went to buy a license and tags today before the deadline and all the prices are showing up as out of state cost. Anyone have any ideas why this would be?

Thanks

You probably need to buy your first license at a dealer, and not online. Not sure about the resident/non-resident issue, but I do know to buy your first Washington state license you have to do so in person at a dealer in order to show proof that you passed a hunter education course.

Ah, thanks for the pointer. I guess I'm missing the deadline this year then.

I have another question though: how do elk tags work here? Is it also a lottery draw? Are they difficult to get?

You can talk hunter ed online with no field day requirement now due to the kung flu.

Nevermind, i see you said you did that, so what deadline are you referring to?

Honestly, you may want to hold off on buying a bunch of licenses and tags.  Check the deadlines and a good strategy is to wait until you know you will be able to go hunt and it will be open.

Elk tags are unlimited, you just have to choose if you want to hunt east or west, and also you have to choose archery, muzzle loader, or modern firearm.

Also I should point out the only deadline you missed is for the multiple season deer and elk special permits. Not a real big deal. I didn't apply for either one.

Oh, perfect! I read the website wrong I guess. I rifle hunt for meat so all I cared about was getting a deer and elk tag. Thanks for clarifying for me!

Thanks for posting.

Lost my card from when I did it in 6th grade. Now I can do it without the hassle of going somewhere.😉

Living here since 2017 doesn't make you qualify for resident prices. If you've had a WA DL for less than the required amount of time for WDFW residency purposes, then you're still a non-resident in that regard.  If you do meet all requirements to purchase at resident prices, then just as it was said earlier, you'll need to get to a dealer for your initial purchase.  The same thing happened to me a few years ago and I had to do the same for my fiance a couple years ago.  Get yourself to a Fred Meyer or whatever that is open and get your tags and apps in.

Thank you for confirming. I'm planning on heading over to Fred Meyer tomorrow

You're welcome. If you want to apply for multi-season deer or elk, today is your last day. If you want those, at least get those in today somewhere.
