New barrel time
« on: April 02, 2020, 03:40:51 PM »
Pretty sure the 243 barrel is on its way out. Thinking about playing with a new cartridge for a barrel or so.  Looking for some ideas to ponder. Would prefer to stick with the same bolt face but might change that, 6mm or larger cal., run in SA ai mag, and not a creed bore.

If I was replacing a 243 would look hard at the 6mm Dasher.  Seems to be a rising star.  ???

that may be a good option to shorten this barrel and rechamber

6 creed is giving me very good results.  6 dasher is a good one.  But might have some feeding issues.  I run 115 vlds with 6 creed at 3070 with 26”

The .243 Win is solid. I imagine you have a ample brass supply. Might be worth staying with the same chambering.

6mm Dasher
6mm Creedmoor
6x47 Lapua

The 6xc has a slight speed advantage over the Dasher. There’s Norma brass for both. Peterson makes 6XC brass also. When I kicked it around it seemed if a guy had a Dasher there wasn’t a real need to go to the XC. But the majority that were choosing between the two, went with the XC. I just went 6mm Creedmoor. Due to the fact I already had a 6.5 CM and a bunch of brass and just necked it down for the 6mm CM. I haven’t shot mine for some time. Since I ran out of my stash of 105gr A-Max’s. Haven’t taken the time to work up some new loads with a different bullet.

I think you should stay with that barrel as long as it shoots fine and is accurate. Need to spend the money on other things.

trouble is it only shoots good at short range, I rarely shoot at short range.  I’m in no hurry to rebarreled it as I have other toys to play with. But it takes a long time to get a new barrel these days.

you are correct as I have tons of 243 components.  I do have a Redding die set for 243ai.
Just sold a rifle the other day that I had for 3 or 4 years and never shot it once, that’s my barrel $$ now.   When I first rebarreled this rifle I was wanting 243ai.  Maybe now it’s time to do that. Probably the cheapest route since I have brass and dies and bullets already.
Plus I’ve been thinking about getting a lite weight hunting barrel for my vanguard in 338edge

Bugholes.com has barrels on hand. I’ve shot Rock Creek Barrels in  6.5-284 and 300 Win Mag over the years and they were very accurate barrels.

Rock Creek 7 twist.
