Tooth aged blacktail from 2019
« on: May 02, 2020, 06:39:26 AM »
got my results back from last years blacktail.   4 year old 2x2.  He was bedded in the Christmas trees 200 yards out.  When i spotted the buck he was staring straight at me.  From the width of his horns and body size i could tell he was a mature buck.  I decided to take him.  Killed him in his bed.  Took me a bit to locate him after walking over to where he was bedded.  Once i did find him i was surprised it was a 2 point.

Right on! I've taken a couple of blacktail forkie's that no way were they 1.5 or 2.5 year old bucks. Bodies too big and full. One had a Roman nose and had wounds all over his chest and ribs from fighting. Little stab wounds I found while skinning him.  Thanks for the insight

Beauty buck! Great info  They can fool ya when they get that frame up top and body size to go along with it. Add in heavy vegetation and  a rainstorm  :chuckle: I think they are all trophies regardless of what they end up being.  Congrats thanks for sharing

First off Im not saying hes not 4 years old, but I am pointing out that if he was a june born or july born fawn he would have been at 3.5 or 4.5 years of age at time of harvest, not straight up 4.

Reason I point this out is there are various articles from QDMA and others that have actual records of deer from farms and since they know actual age, they can compare results they receive from state game agencies.  It is said to be common for the tests to be +- 1 year and sometimes more.

So the built in 1/2 year default plus the inherent +- leaves one to believe its only an estimate.  I am waiting on the results from my buck from 11-15-2019 that we have pictures of him from 2013 and every consecutive year.  We'll see if they are close with their +-.

That will be interesting to hear what they say since you have a pretty close idea of what it should be already.

I shot one like that a few years ago.  I only had glances as he ran through the timber and was surprised to find a heavy body, big 2 point like that.

Great looking deer! The head/face seems to have gone through at least three winters.

Wow. That's some really good genetics if the tooth analysis is correct.

Was the tooth submitted or was it just viewed by someone from wdfw ?  If it was only viewed, if you still have the jaw, send in the tooth.  I see characteristics that point to it being older than that.

Also, if it was sent in, when was it sent in and when were results received as I am also waiting for results.
