So you are bear hunting and you see a large female (without cubs) being chased by a smaller  boar, which bear do you shoot?

Shoot the boar
Shoot the bigger female
Let them both walk

Poll: shoot the biggest bear, or just the boar?
« on: May 05, 2020, 11:01:48 AM »
This situation happened to me on my last spring bear hunt, the female was a tank of a bear.  The boar was pretty big too but definitely smaller, so my decision was easy.  But if he was smaller, not sure I would have passed up that sow.  I got a great look at her when I went to find the boar, she stood up at 60 yards and was pissed.

Exactly how do you know its a small boar chasing a female instead of maybe a smaller female chasing a boar off?I voted larger bear goes down.

Funny this was, there was a small bear, looked like it could have been her cub from the previous year a couple hundred yards away watching him chase her.

I wouldn’t know till I looked between the legs, lol. Just going off a more common situation.  This situation the boar would not leave her, even after I shot and missed at 700 yards. She brought him back around to me at 500 and I didn’t miss that time. Can’t wait to go at it again this weekend!

I wonder if a hot and bothered boar would leave a downed sow?  Might be a awkward situation?

Spring bear is a damage hunt. Not a trophy hunt. They want bears killed not passed.

Given that I would shoot a male over a female every day regardless of size in the spring.

Bigger-sow, color phase-sow, same size same color-whichever gave me the best shot.  Can't complain about lack of predator control and then not take the easy solution. JMHO.

My biggest bear was a barren sow.  She was old and dry.  If there are no cubs I shoot the biggest bear or the first to present a good shot given your scenario.

Save a few elk or deer and shoot the sow?  Aren't we all up in arms about needing predator control?

My thought as well. I go into all bear hunts anymore telling myself I don't care what size it is as long as its legal its dead. saving deer fawns and elk calves is the main goal for me anymore.

Usually I can predict how a poll will come out, but I have to admit this one surprises me a bit. I don’t disagree, just surprised.
