Is it too late to switch things up?

I don’t know didly about bows. My 14yo son got his bow for Xmas in 2018.  He used it successfully to shoot a doe last fall. He is in need for new arrows, but I’m thinking his draw length has increased since he got the bow. He’s shooting great now, so would it hurt or help to increase his draw length this close to the Sept. opener?

Set him up at a target and take pictures of him at full with an arrow knocked. Look up "nuts and bolts of archery". It's a great PDF with a section on analysing someone's draw to tell if they need an increase or decrease.

Well, I've done it twice, I broke a string the night before season, and I decided to go to heavier arrows the week before season.   At  the time, I shot a lot so it didnt take much to get back on track with either.    If he has enough arrows to make it through season, and he is shooting well, I might hesitate to change things up.  If he doesnt have good arrows for hunting, Better get to work

If he's shooting great now I would hold what you got.  I feel like every time I change something up I end up chasing things around for a couple weeks (depending on how much time I have to chase it) until I'm back to feeling comfortable and shooting consistently.  Just my experience.

I think it also has something to do with how much change you are adding into their shooting.  For instance, my son grew 3 inches in draw length since last year so we had to increase his draw, up his poundage, and buy new arrows because I didn't think it through enough the year before to let him grow into his arrows.  Big mistake.  He has been shooting OK, a bit frustrated and not as tough as he thought with the increase in poundage.  He has been working this new setup now for over a month.

I agree with some of the earlier posts if you don't have to mix it up right before season I wouldn't but if you are way off in a safe setup then it's best to make the change and plow thru.  Just an opinion.

All else being equal it would help to increase his draw length and get new arrows matched to it.  Draw length is as basically free energy, if at all possible I would try to capitalize on it.

) Be sure the new length is adjusted correctly, AND arrows are spined correctly to accommodate the change.

) Don't make the mistake of trying to adjust both length and weight at the same time, unless very short or very very easy weight. Increased DL is more difficult to move because it must move a farther distance. Trying to bump both can be rough and lead to sloppy form and inconsistentency.

It’s not to late assuming you get everything dialed back in before your hunt. If improving his draw length you will likely only make him more accurate.

Well, we kept it the same, and it all worked out. He shot a real nice buck the first evening. Unfortunately the add attachments on this web site doesn't work, so I can't post a pic.
