Bucket list antelope?
« on: December 21, 2020, 01:34:09 PM »
Hey everybody so I’m doing research on going on a rifle antelope hunt next year. I’ve heard Wyoming is king and that it’s fairly easy draw odds and also access to hunting due to the oil roads you drive and basically pick out the buck you want and go after it. Montana is also an option for me. Not looking for anyone’s hunny holes or specific spots but some advice or maybe get me going down the right path or direction would be greatly appreciated!
If its brown its down... or black... well if it has four legs.. or webbed feet... or fins... ok, ok if its edible!

Are you looking for a B&C buck or a representative mature buck?

Just a decent buck. Never shot one before and would love something possibly mount worthy but doesn’t have to be a giant

I would start with a GoHunt subscription and put in for every state you can hunt for.  If you have never hunted them, it's best to go in thinking the first hunt will be more scouting and learning.

I have a MT spot and a WY spot and they both used to be every other year hunts, I would go to one this year and the other next.  My MT spot turned into an every three year spot and the WY spot was bust this year due to bad winter kill and greatly reduced tags, so my plan is a bit messy now.

Both spots would be considered very marginal, tiny little pockets that hold goats on extremely limited public access and they are still 2-3 points.

You can buy the expensive tags in WY to increase your odds in some units.

I would start buying points and look for units with good public access and take a trip for a combo camping/scouting trip next fall, you can go in August or early September and get a decent idea of what land holds goats.  There are a ton out there, but there are also tons and tons of land they are never or rarely on so internet scouting will only get you so far.

One thing we found hunting during the rut was that if a buck was way out and moving away show him something white like a tshirt and they would come a running in. Our group killed 5 antelope bucks in 2 hours using this method

Thanks everyone for the advice. I was thinking about getting a gohunt subscription and this just confirmed I probably should!

Are landowners more apt to give permission for Antelope trespass hunting or do you need to concentrate your search on public land areas and units?

Not really.  They know what they have in terms of value.

Pretty much everything Stein said.

Wyoming is great but the units that are easiest to draw have the least public land.  Randy Newberg will tell you about how your onX subscription puts you at an advantage in those units but when everyone has onX you don’t have any advantage at all.  You’ll find the public land easily enough, but you’ll have company.

If you can find a rancher who will charge a reasonable trespass fee, that can make life a lot easier.
