Only a matter of time before Washington residents are charged sales tax when shopping in Oregon as Washington is losing millions as consumers fail to report and pay their required use tax.    :bash:

Really doubt that. How would Oregon implement that? They have no sales tax infrastructure right now.

They charge tax for online sales because the item is shipped to WA.  If the item is purchased in OR in person, no way they will ever charge WA tax on items except I think some car dealers will take care of it for you as an option.  Outside that, not going to happen as nobody would know whether the item will end up in WA or not.  Tax isn't due if it doesn't cross the bridge or if you give or sell it to someone else.  WA can't tax an item that isn't delivered, brought to and/or registered in WA.

Yes, unless they catch you

How would they do that ?? There not registered there are no tabs no plates
The cameras on the bridges crossing into Oregon are monitored. I know some one that was hit with "USE" tax which you are supposed to pay if you bring something back into Washington. They hit big ticket items being towed by personal vehicles. I happen to know some one whom this happened to.

I have a friend who bought an excavator and a tractor in Oregon at different times. They drove down here & brought them home on a trailer. They’ve been fine without paying tax.

If they have people who monitor it when you come over the state line how in the heck do they know if it’s a new machine? You could be borrowing it. I highly doubt they pay that much attention.

If you have a washington home address you get taxed.

This is not true. I know plenty of guys that have purchased rifles in OR that live in WA and we’re not taxed. I also know of someone that purchased a skid steer with no issue.

The question was about heavy equipment, not firearms. I own an excavating business, i buy and sell equipment every year and the only legal way to avoid the tax buying in oregon as a washington based business is to have  an owner/member of at least 50% share with an oregon address. Notice i said legally, i don't hive a *censored* what you guys do.

If any business in any state has a business presence in Washington, that business is required by WA to collect and remit sales tax at time of purchase based on the buyers address.

Is the OP using this for business?

If not using it for business, regardless of legality,  it would be impossible to enforce. No different than someone doing their  Christmas  shopping spree in Portland. Cash or card purchase should not be a problem. Financing will complicate the process most banks won't mess around,  it's by the book.

I personally  wouldn't risk it for a business.

I financed a boat from a dealer and closed on everything without paying tax.  I did pay tax eventually when it was registered, but the bank had and continues to have no idea it was ever registered, in what state or whether tax was paid.

Drive across the bridge and buy some stuff at Costco and no tax will be paid at purchase even though they obviously have presence in Washington and know your address.  Same with any other store.

Same with any other state, you will pay whatever sales tax they have (if they have one), just think about how crazy it would be if every state had to check your ID and then adjust sales tax rates on the fly for whatever state you lived in.  In WA, tax varies by county so they would have to apply hundreds, if not thousands of different tax rates.

In Clark county tax rates can change by city. That would be a mess.

Bought two Kubota tractors on the other side of the river out of Longview. Did not pay tax and never questioned.
