Another special hunt question
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:34:43 PM »
I'm looking at what tags to apply for for elk and am kind of confused.  Next to the "Dayton A" tag there is a little c footnote thing that says it is private land and that access is extremely limited.  So does that mean that your not allowed to hunt in the Rainwater Indian owned ground? It is feel free to hunt but i do not know if that would exclude umatilla national forest and Rainwater Indian ground.

I tumbled him..

Check the boundry description and mark it on a map so you can see where you can hunt.

It says the tag is for GMU 162. The Umatilla National Forest and Rainwater Indian ground is in 162. Next to Dayton A it has a little C right next to it which is a footnote that reads: Private lands; access is extremely limited.  If you cannot secure access to private lands do not apply for these hunts.  So does that mean i would only be allowed to hunt private ground? if that simplifies it at all.
I tumbled him..

right...the permit does not grant you permission to access private land if thats what you're getting at. if you are not a land owner or don't have access to land, it would not be wise to put in for the permit.

"ok so you can't hunt on public land."

I don't read it that way.  I read it as you can legally hunt anywhere in GMU 162.  However, the state is warning you that much of GMU 162 is private land.  You can hunt on any public land in GMU 162 on which hunting is allowed, or on any private land for which you have permission.

I predict that by next year we are all going to have to hire Pope to read and interpret the WDFW Hunting Pamphlet for us.  Myabe that's why he puts up with so much crap from us.  He figures if he can just stick it out another year or two we'll be a gold mine... :chuckle:

This is the way I have always understood this.  Same with the question of the 49 degrees north whitetail tag.  Much of the valley of 49 degrees north is private, and many whitetail holding in the valley, so thus they want you to ask property owners for permission prior to hunting private property (as it should be).

I guess what he is saying is he wants to put in for a Unit he knows nothing about besides all the big bull talk and wants to put in for it , do your homework and look at the maps. Its not hard to outline a map and find your public hunting grounds. RESEARCH!

Be nice, he is 17 and is smart enough to ask a good pointed question, instead of what unit should I apply for.  LOL

Now I am not super familiar with the area myself, but there is or was a big portion of that watershed that you can't hunt in even though its public.  They watch it quite closely as I remember because everyone wants to hunt in it as its got some huge hawgs, especially muledeer.
