Best battery for marine starting
« on: April 16, 2021, 09:37:50 AM »
Just replacing the battery in my boat. Only really used for starting, I don’t have a trolling motor. Any suggestions or do I need anything different than a standard car battery? It’s a 20 horse Suzuki

Car battery is certainly the least expensive option.  I wouldn’t spend more unless the weight is a big concern.

You can likely go with a fairly small one if you want, it doesn’t take much to turn that motor over.

Look up the CCA your motor needs for starting. I have a 35hp Mud Buddy short shaft that I start with a ridiing lawn mower battery.

Ok I’ll just pick up an interstate from the auto parts store I think then if anything would work. I want something that’s going to be reliable and long lasting in cold weather

Best thing to do to keep them reliable for as long as possible is to keep them well charged.  If you go for a period where you won't be regularly using it, get a good charger designed to charge and maintain batteries and keep it plugged in.  They are fairly cheap and Cabelas used to run sales on them all the time.

Is it just a start battery or will it be running electronics that get left on for long periods during the day while you're fishing, recreating, etc.?

Dyno or interstate or Trojan

Full river if you have deep pockets

I’d avoid optima, they stared using a lesser lead alloy from
Mexico

Firefly or North Star if budget isn’t an issue

AGM is great but you need a charger and that has agm cycles

Standard lead acids are great but you have to remember to top off the water time to time

Go to pacific power and ask for a blem

I run lead acids cuz they are cheap and don’t need a special charger

I have two of these in my boat, purchased new in 04, and I’ve never touched them.

Keep your group 24 for your engine start and then install a pair of 6volt golf carts (as we call em) wired in series should give you 220 amp hours or so, and if that bank is isolated from your start bank but able to charge off an alternator via an ACR or something then you should be totally fine, I run a pair of golf carts and a group 31 for my entire sailboat paired to a 100watt solar panel and never ever ever ever have power consumption issues

Here is a plug for USA batteries, I have been using Deka made by East Penn.   Awesome batteries, I dont run battery tenders on anything and these just keep on going.
