I base it mostly on what I want to do for general elk season. If rifle season fits my schedule better, I'll get the rifle tag and then choose a couple quality rifle permits to apply for. Or if I want to hunt the general muzzleloader season, then I'll go with that. No matter how many points you have you certainly can't count on drawing a quality bull permit. So just go with what general season is better for you.

I started thinking I was going to draw for sure about 10 years ago, now I’m at 26 points.  Just put in for what you want to hunt when you don’t draw. Good luck

With 20 points there is no rifle quality unit with 10% draw odds and there are no good quality muzzleloader quality permits so I’d go with bobcat. Pick a general season that meets your schedule.

what does it matter muzzy or rifle? find a hunt you want and apply for. Acutally, your chance of drawing is still slim even with 20 points so I would buy my tag muzzy or rifle based on what I would do without drawing, then put in for the draw I most want, its all personal preference.

Points don't mean crap in this state.  I drew Dayton archery bull in 2009 with 5 pts.  Had 2 buddies draw it withing the following 3 years with 4 and 7 pts.

Apply for rifle....one less person I have to complete with in the draw.

20 pts get you from .02% to 3% odds at the best rifle tag in the state.  The blue units maybe 3-4 percent chance.  Most people with 20 plus points will never draw, I have several buddies including myself with 23 oil pts and haven't drawn and probably won't with less than 1% chance.  I have been fortunate to draw a few good tags with average points but that's the part of the system some like.  To me the system really screws the younger generation and forces out of state hunting but even that is changing will lower and lower tag allocations across the west for out of state hunters.

Totally agree, I wish everyone would go to Idaho's system, no points, pick deer, elk, antelope or a single OIL species and people could apply for different things in different units.  I probably like Arizona system the 2nd best with some preference point tags but plenty of random draw with bonus points.

However, the real problem is just that there are way more hunters than game (which is a good thing for the sport overall), but it makes drawing a tag in any state on any given year increasingly difficult and certainly makes money become more and more of a factor, but that is the world we live in.  Happy we still get a chance to draw, it may be small but at least there is a chance.

Numbers of hunters is good for the sport in general, but when WA's elk numbers are tanking while other states are at or above capacity and increasing opportunities, you realize how bad the state really is.

I quit playing when I watched the tag numbers in the unit I like go from about a hundred to low single digits.  No plan in place, no word from WDFW, complete lack of performance in any regard in their part, so I play elsewhere.

If you keep playing, WDFW just interprets that as keep on doing what they are doing, more applicants is a box on a spreadsheet in a powerpoint showing how well the operation is going.  Sad but true, you know that stat is paraded around as evidence of their success.
