Blue rump elk
« on: July 09, 2021, 07:13:28 AM »
I have seen the blue rumped elk on my cams a few times. Any idea what is going on, or why she is colored like that?
The cam is in Thurston county and I have messaged the biologist in the area, however haven't heard back.

Sheep farm near by?  :chuckle: Do elk farms use dye bags?
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

It looks like it might be the beginning of mange to me. This article has a good example of it:  https://wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/diseases/hair-loss

Looks to me like that "blue" area is where there is no hair, just skin.
