Congrats! That sounds like a great tag and you should have plenty of opportunity. I used to do a lot of backpacking up in that area and I'd hear and see plenty of elk in September. I haven't been in a number of years, but my strategy would to be to pick a less popular trail to hike in on and make a spike camp off trail but near water.
