lest not forget, a major area of the fire is within the William O. Douglas Wilderness. That is the elk's summer range.

latest fire lines have it kissing the slopes of Mt Aix, down the canyons from Bismarck and Rattlesnake Peaks.
Major drainages of Dog, Hindoo and Lookout creeks in the wilderness have been burned. Along with Rattlesnake creek on the wilderness side of Timberwolf Mtn.

this season is screwed, but next year and the years ahead are going to be some damn good elk hunting! think about the postives out of this fire returning during its interval.

I am thinking reduced canopy and cover equals increased native take. Easier to see them in burns.

I agree. There were years and years of deadfall in the wilderness area, and it is only a matter of time before all of that fuel turns into a big fire.

Today's meeting of fire control/fighting staff concludes that the Little Rattlesnake drainage will be allowed to burn, with the containment fire line established all along the top of Bethel ridge line. The 4wd road that goes along the top of Bethel is being dozered for a containment line. This pretty much guarantees 70% of unit-GMU 360 will be burned, if fire stops at top of Bethel ridge.

the fire to the southwest, through Cash Prairie to Shellrock, Bismarck, Rattlesnake Peaks will burn until it reaches rockline. Very little fuel at Peak/rock line.

So bummed out. GMU's 356-360 is an area that I've hunted/licensed for elk since 1966. Every year, every season with exception of one college year.

Yeah, super bad for hunting this year but it will be unbelievable in 2-3 years.  Unfortunately, a guy only draws the tag once and it's a roll of the dice what year you get.

I drew the year Peaches burned to a crisp - lost plans a, b, c and some cams in the blaze but I kept the tag and hunted it and don't regret it for a minute.  Looking back, the points would do me no good now, tag numbers continued to crash and points built up so that every year was noticeably worse odds.

I feel for the guys who go from the high of the draw to the disappointment of fire, not to mention anyone who owns stuff threatened by the fire.

  I have a Q-Bull archery for Bethel. I don't see it opening up by the 11th or anytime through the end of the month. They have closed off all access to the unit from all sides. guess I will probably turn in my tag and hope for another miracle draw. Really bummed.

I would still wait until the last minute to turn in the Q-Tag. I had the Bethel Q-Tag in 2016 and found lots of big bulls in areas that have not had any fire yet. Going to be a tough call, not knowing if you will ever if ever draw that tag again

I could see the fired cresting the ridge from my house last night.  I live 40 miles away in the Wenas.  I’m not sure if it was Bethel or what.   Was just surprised to see flames torching the ridgeline
