Going to Yakutat
« on: May 06, 2009, 01:04:18 PM »

Heading to Yakutat June 4-7 for Bottom fish, ocean kings and try for some river steelies, sockeye or kings...anybody been there that time of year. I want to float the Situk River for socks and steelies and try the bay for kings...Are there any flyouts for Kings.

Seems a little late for good fresh steelie fishing but then again it might not be as crowded and they are still in the river so it could be great. Not sure about the kings. Great halibut fishin that time of year! Other fly outs to ask about are to the Tsiu or Italio rivers. All in all you should have a great time!

I was thinkin that steelies peaked about right now.  I've made several false starts gonna go up there and do that.... just never ended up putting that one together.  I'll be interested to hear if you get into the metalheads.  Good Luck!

Oh yes, the ole AS61 from SeaTac.

I've spent the last 6 years running a charter boat out of Sitka and made a trip up to the Situk the first week of May each of those years (some of the most impressive steelhead fishing i've ever seen). I've caught steelhead in the rivers on Baranof Island as late as mid-July so you should see fish for sure. I'm jealous this is my first year not going to AK since I escaped highschool. Good luck!
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

The chances of getting fresh fish are pretty low.  The peak is right now.  The later into May you get the more spawners and kelts you're gonna get.  Please don't fish on spawners.  I personally think you are about a month late.  The ocean fishing should be good and I'm sure there will be some kings in the rivers.

www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/FishCounts/index.cfm/FA/main.displayResults This should tell you the numbers of downstreamer/Kelts that will be in the river at that time.  It looks like they will be spawning big time.  It also shows that there aren't many kings in the rivers then.
