I've been wanting to for awhile.  My friend on here has a M114 American Classic with detachable magazine that he wants to trade me.  I'm reluctant because I want to replace the stock with a glass one, but can't seem to find a cheap glass stock out there for it.  They seem like quite a platform to build on though!

Most of your questions on building on a Savage action can be answerred here.

http://savageshooters.com/index.php

I've built four rifles on Savage action, mostly installing custom barrels and fitting the existing stock to me.  I like the Accu-trigger and I don't use bipods so I just hog out the barrel channel so it can't touch the barrel even iif I get too far back on the bag.  These are all combo varmint/pred or pred/medium game hunting rigs.

Sharp Shooters Supply is the place to go for target parts for a Savage.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I'll throw in another plug for Sharp Shooters Supply and Savageshooters.com. Those are two of the best resources for all things Savage. Here's a couple pics of my Savage build. It doesn't look drastically different, but the performance has certainly been stepped up a notch.

It's not a target/bench gun, but here's my Savage build.

This started as an LRPV in .223 Rem. I changed the bolt (baffle, bolt head, and firing pin), had the action timed and tuned by SSS, screwed on a 30" Pac-Nor Super Match 300 WSM barrel, and painted the stock, put on a Leuplod MkII 6-18x40 scope in Burris Signature rings, and called it good. The Accu-Trigger is set at 9oz, and the action is as smooth as they get. I'm working on loads for it, but so far 185gr Berger VLDs at 2980fps are shooting around .4" for 5 shots at 100 yards. Once I recover some funds, I'll look into getting a new stock as well. Good luck with you build!

Thanks thats a great picture....

Well so far i have set the trigger at a crisp 2 or so lbs....dont really have a gauge but it is light pull.

also started shaving the stock....started off looking butt ugly, and when im done it will look like a tactical mcmillian. and for alot less! Nice thing about not being scared of messing up.....lol.....

does anyone here no anything about cutting the bolt off and putting and extended bolt handle on a savage bolt? maybe a badger ordinance or something similar? can this be doen with a savage bolt handle?

There's no need to cut the bolt on a Savage. The bolt just dissasembles and you slide on a new bolt handle. Here's a link to some info on the Savage bolt.

Mike Rock makes barrels for Savages, Shilen, Pac Nor, Hart, and Lawton.

If you're dead set on cutting the bolt and replacing it.  Go with a Badger Odnance.  You won't be upset.  I have one on my 700 and a guy I know has one on his 700 and his savage.  You can find the bolt knob and the installation all in one online for around 70 bucks.

I have a bit of experience, or at least am gaining it. My hunt bud has a 110 in 270. I just got the custom machined pillars in last week and tonight were bedding it. The front pillar is easy, the back is so close to the trigger assy I just put one in ahead of it a bit that the rear screw wont go thru. The pillar is .02" above the stock for complete contact. Since the action is a round action I had a .675" Radius added to the top of the pillars for no side to side wobble and complete contact.
This is the first step we are taking to accurise the gun. Next will be the trigger...

Were not trying to make a tack driver, just a awesomely consistant hunting rifle.

The gun started as a 300 dollar Walmart gun.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

Sure would like to see a picture of those bedding blocks...and i went ahead and set my trigger by myself...no need for aftermarket assembly when you can set the factory trigger....Easy as pie.

well i think im going pac nor...havnt looked into the others yet but pac nr was recommended elsewhere and so i think i got a winner....now to save pennies.....

Weatherby is sitting in the corner waiting for a scope...just got mounts and rings for her the other day.....that was about 60bucks.

Dont want to take my leupold off my 270 trusty untill i have another one for it so im waiting.....that and i dont have any bullets reloaded for it yet. I have my reloading bench in pieces after my move a month ago......its sitting in the corner of my storage shed and its got some rusty spots so i want to sand it and re-paint it before i mount my new press on it (I also just ended up buying a new lee press)....I dont want my press to rust or get rusty....

But it is coming also....ill practice with it untill i get my savage build finished....

I ALWAYS HAVE A MILLION PROJECTS GOING ON AT ONCE......someday ill finish one of them...lol.

OH AND NO IT ISNT AN ACCUTRIGGER.......actually not a huge fan of the accutrigger...the old style is just as easily adjusted and crisp pulling....if anything i might smooth out triggers edges...kind of sharp and not very finger friendly.

anyone tell me what the big deal with the accutrigger is?

Jay, Ill get pics of the blocks. I have them made here in my machine shop. If you have the same style rifle I can have more made easily. I make them out of steel so we can shape and blue them once the rifle is finished. I have the drawing of the blocks still so Ill get a pic of that too.

Give me a day or so and Ill document it all. Tonight Ill seperate the action from the stock as we glass bed it last night.

Its amazing how solid the contact is between the stock and action now. No wood or plastic soft squish as you tighten the screws.

By having the pillars up .02" we gained a much free flaoted barrel too.

Gonna start the trigger tonight...

Got some custom rounds loaded to try this weekend. Buddy is excited.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.
