Blown bearing on trailer wheel, need new axle?
« on: July 23, 2022, 11:17:43 AM »
Using my dad's boat and blew a bearing on the trailer. Unfortunately, we heard a funny noise but just thought it was the rough country road we were on....

Then we drove 70 miles.

Does this look like I need to replace the axle? And the hub?

I haven't priced them yet, but probably the best thing to do.

TIA

Does that spindle have a groove or depression worn in it? If so, yes, need axle replaced. New hub /bearings won't seal properly if that spindle is damaged.

Temper is gone out of it. Put a new axle in it and be done with it.

Saved one after the grease fire years ago, but that looks like toast.  Threads included.

Doesn't look that bad to me.  Clean it up, a little filing, some sandpaper, maybe clean the threads with a die if needed.  Doesn't look like it needs any welding.

I did countless replacements of spindles and bearings and seals on ag equipment in the middle of a dirt field. The farmer usually doesn't know a wing wheel is bad until it comes off and fills with dirt or seizes or grinds itself off etc. That spindle is toast and will not seal properly ever again. The slightest imperfection will allow grease to leak out and dirt to get in and will always end up failing over and over. Get it all replaced.

That thing is junk. Like someone else posted the temper of that axle is gone. Once the temper is gone any imperfection can cause it to shear off. You don’t want that liability. It should be replaced. You could look into having the spindle cut off and a new one welded on. I use to use a place called Axle Masters when I worked at a truck dealer. They would come to your location and replace the spindle and machine it down to spec.  It saved the customer from a complete axle replacement.

The entire axle with everything on it should only be about $500. What's the weight rating on the trailer?

You need a spindle, hub, and of course, bearings.  No need to replace the entire axle unless you can find one cheap.  Depending on how the spindle is attached to the axle, (sweated, welded, interference pressed in) will also be a determining factor on which way to go.
