2023 sheds….let’s see em.
« on: January 02, 2023, 07:36:44 AM »
Here it is for when they do start to drop.

Everything around me is still packing.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Saw a bull yesterday only packing a left side.

Very early for elk, likely never grew one, or broke off.

Seen one was well the week before Christmas. Figured he'd broke it off but it was right at his pedestal

I've never found a fresh elk shed before March but I've found fresh deer as early as December 15 and seen deer with both sides in the same area well into spring. I think with the right combination of stress and other factors antlers can shed any time after the rut

Its an interesting topic I don't want to thread jack but I'm pretty sure stress nutrients and losing daylight are the 3 biggest factors. I'm sure genetics are in the mix too. I think once their done fighting over women they don't really need them until the next rut

Testosterone drop is what makes the antlers shed. The animal carries the testosterone levels from the rut until the spring with most species and then the levels drop causing the antler base to deteriorate. A sick or wounded animal would probably do that much sooner so Karl could have easily seen a bull with a shed antler. Keep an eye out for it!

Let’s get this started, couple New Years sheds from north Idaho. Most are still packing but I’m seeing quite a few bald heads too.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.
