Muzzy Cleaning kit recommendations
« on: June 13, 2023, 03:21:13 PM »
It seems like all my cleaning supplies for the muzzleloader are kind of a mismatch. The brushes etc don’t work with my good cleaning kits. I can use the ramrod, but I’d rather get set up with good supplies. Specifically can someone recommend a good cleaning rod that long enough and strong enough to work with a long barreled 50 cal?
Thanks

I usually use the ramrod, but screw on a cleaning jag that is maybe 5 or 6inches long which provides that extra length needed.

I started out with my T/C 50 cal Flintlock 40 yrs ago.  I use a screw together aluminum shotgun cleaning rod, 50 cal brush, and a jag for patches.  My method is take the barrel off, sidelock off the stock, unscrew the flash hole screw from the barrel and place everything in the sink with hot soapy water.  Then get some water boiling on the stove.  After your done scrubbing your sidelock and flash hole screw, rinse it then drop them in your pot of boiling water. While that is soaking I scrub my barrel. Once your barrel is clean, remove your parts from the boiling water and lay  on a towel.  They will be hot so use something to grab them.  From the heat they will dry on their own.  Now using an oven mitt or towel, hold your barrel in the sink.  I use a glass measuring cup since it has a spout on it and pour the water into your barrel letting it come out you flash hole or plug end.  The barrel will become very hot and evaporate the water out.  Now you just have to oil everything and put back together.

This is more than you asked for but today they try to sell you everything under the sun to "clean" your ML that we didn't have back then and I feel isn't necessary.
