Where to affix the tag to a back country bear
« on: August 26, 2023, 03:51:39 PM »
Hi all, new to the state and focused exclusively on bears. When hunting in the back country I plan to debone it and remove the coat. If I do that where do I need to place the tag? On the bears coat?

Stuff it in a bag of meat.

Buddy zip tied his to the ear last weekend. Wasn't ideal, but it stayed on. I was suggesting in the mouth with a zip tie around the snout, but it probably wouldn't go anywhere without the zip tie.

Thanks, I think I’m squared away.

Tongue with zip tie is a pretty good idea.

Tossing it in the bag w/meat if I lose, break or forget the zip tie.

I know you are suppose to attach it to the animal, but for every bear I've killed I have quartered and packed out the meat, never the hide, sometimes the head. So I always notch my tag and put it back in my wallet so I don't lose it. If I make 2 trips the tag is with me/the meat I am transporting. I keep the tag with the meat I am transporting either loose in the bag or in my wallet. Either way you would be hard-pressed to find a game warden that would cite you for that if everything else is done right. That's just what I do.

If you don’t keep the hide, it attaches to the biggest piece of meat or the one with evidence of sex

Debone the bear into game bags and put the tag in one of the bags.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Tongue with a zip tie is a horrible idea if you need to get the tag out to show someone. When the jaw locks shut with rigor it’s not coming open again. Just tie it to the pelt anywhere or whatever you feel makes sense. Don’t over think it.

I just roll up the tag and poke it into the animal's throat.  I've been checked by Fish and Game, and they happily helped me pry the jaws open to show them the tag.  In my experience, they're generally just tickled pink that you tagged it legally and they're not writing a ticket.  Once those jaws lock with rigor-mortis, that tag isn't going to fall off, so you'll never have to go looking for it (had to do that once... in the dark  :bash: ).
That being said, black electrical tape around the ankle is a sound choice too... :twocents:
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I'm usually back a ways so am boning meat out and just throw it in a game bag, or maybe in with the evidence of sex which is in a separate baggie attached to a large piece of meat.  I've never heard of a game warden caring that it is actually physically attached to an animal, especially if its been cut up already.  If anyone's run into that issue, this would be a good time to tell us about it!

Speaking of evidence of sex...what do you keep for a sow?

Notch it and keep it in a safe spot until you are back at your truck.
