Good day crabbing and shrimping

Went with Pope yesterday and his cousins, we had aa great day, 320 shrimp, limited out on crabs, heck we so many we had to dump an extra limit out...  and the best part..........drum roll first time I went after Dog Fish and got some, too funny as the Barbie rod kicked my butt...

As any self respecting boat man will say, I didn't sanction the dog fishing.  I sat in the cab and drank a few cold ones while my cousin outfished Cohoho and his $350 fishing rod outfit with a $5 Barbie push reel rod.     He got 2 that went about 3 feet long.  Some serious pig dog fish.

Other than that, tons of shrimp and crabs.  It was a great day in terms of weather and such as well.

Aaaaahhhh, I had to let the kid win.....  I am going to challenge him when I purchase my Snoopy rod..............  Actually have never been fishing for them before yesterday .  I got my steel leaders now to attack them in fun style...  It was a great trip, good people, cold beers and perfect weather....  What else could you ask for...

i have heard and done once before, was the funniest thing,  keep the hook in the mouth cut the leader off and leave about 2 feet and tie to and emty beer can,  You will see that can swim around all day.  The smaller ones cant take it down.

Since they outlawed being cruel to dogfish, I have hoped that some group of individuals would find a great use for dogfish and start thinning the heard. They can be a real pest at times, stealing all your bait and wrecking gear....

What's the matter Shaun, didnt want to step as low as hitting the doggies?

I just couldn't do it.  You all know when you are fishing and you perfectly spend a bunch of time rigging your herring to drop it in the water and have a dogfish shred it over and over.     I can't stand dogfish as I've caught thousands of them unintentionally.  It was fun to see them caught on the Barbie rod though.

Barbie pole must have a special power! I have seen and caught my self so many big fish and limits using a Barbie pole! Hint to tournament fishermen, If you are having a tough go, try a barbie pole!

Back in the day we used to cut off the tip of the nose on the dog fish, they lose there sence of dirrection and will do odd thins. Like bump in to the boat, pilings, pier and some times stay on top of the water and swimmaround loking for the bottom.

I know, kinda mean, but we were kids and it was entertainment for us.


Othes would just catch them and trow them on the dock untill they died. I remember walking on the dock and seeing 20+ just rotting away.

Some would stay alive for what seamed like hours..........

When we were herring fishing in the South Sound we would take them by the tail and whack thier heads on the rail. Never did worry about it since there were millions.

I once heard there was a large commercial fishery for them in the Puget Sound.

When I was a kid I worked for a place that processed them and shipped them to Asia, and let me tell you those things are friggin NASTY!!!!  My parents would bring me to work, but I had to walk home LOL!!!

If we start picking up a lot of dog fish, we usually kick up the trolling speed a little.  That slows them down from grabbing your bait.

oh, they'll hit jigs alright.

we used to kill em, but it's really sort of counterproductive.  they're a part of a healthy ecosystem and all.  they are also extremely slow growing.
