Speer Hot Cor G1 bc's
« on: April 01, 2024, 06:46:24 PM »
I recently got a few different 338 bullets together, and found what I thought wa a little odd.  The Speer 200g HotCor spitzer SP (second from left) has an advertised bc of .448.  That seems really high when compared to a very-similarly shaped Partition at .400, and especially compared to the .455 bc of the boat-tail SST.  Even the Barnes looks much slipperier to me than the Hot Cor, but has an advertised G1 of .342.

Am I wrong in thinking the Speer HotCor G1 of .448 seems a little pumped up?

The mighty Hot-Cor does not live by the same laws of physics.

In reality, sounds like a WAG to me. I loaded up some 140s as fireformers, they were anywhere from 139 to 143.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Does seem odd -regardless of BC numbers though that 200gr HotCor is a great bullet in my Ruger 338 WINMAG,It was the first bullet i tried handloading and it shot good so been using it ever since. 74 grains of H4350 and CCI magnum primers(i think thats 1 grain under book max load). That setup has taken over 20 elk since the gun was new and only 1 got away and it was a bad shot -not the bullet’s fault.Wow i sound like a HotCor salesman LOL

That does look odd, thing with the Barnes is that it’s a lighter bullet so it’s naturally going to retain less energy.  I know that nosler often gets accused of inflating their BC numbers so it would be interesting to compare it to the hot cor.

Only way to know for sure is to shoot it at distance and compare results with a ballistic calculator.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
