Homemade Longbow Build w/ Ipe and Hickory
« on: June 16, 2009, 08:37:06 PM »
I am about 90% done with this longbow. I took my sweet time making it. It is Ipe backed with hickory.

This is about 62 inches end to end unbraced. It has no arrow rest - therefore it is somewhat like an english longbow. This particular bow has turned out very narrow which is to my liking. I believe it is around 55-60 lb draw weight right now. I had zero help with this bow.

Before I declare it done I will need to shoot it to confirm the tiller is good, sand it, and finish it with some Tru oil. After I finish it with some tru oil it should make that wood shine a bit more.

Notes.
I glued the timber together using Urac 185.
I used phenolic for the tips , glued on with super glue.
Plenty of time was spent on the cabinet scraper and the belt sander.

I have a good tag for December. My permit says I can shoot does or bucks. That means I should have something down this December. I hope I can nail one with this bow or one of my others.

I took it to the range today. It shoots great. Got bullseyes at 20 yards with most every shot. I think it's closer to 60lbs. I'll finish it off and post some pics later.

Done.

The tiller. I am not sure it is that great but it shoots good (more important than looks) so I am going with it.

There was a guy at the range today who tried out my bow. He said it shot ok.

The glue lines...

Great job Ray. How many total hours invested?

Nice bow, but not near as cute as your daughter!
