What rods do you run with your downriggers for Salmon?
« on: August 23, 2024, 08:32:26 AM »
I've been running a pair of old Shimano TDRs forever off my Scottys. They are just a bit too stiff.  It's time to upgrade. What do you guys recommend?

Edge 924 and 925 pro360. If you order them, don’t expect to fish with them until 2025 worth the wait :twocents:

I'm building four Stryker CT944-2 with acid wraps currently. 9'-4" moderate action, 15-30lbs. Talking with them it's a popular model for running on downriggers or droppers up to 16oz. Got them for 40% off in July. With components I should be into them for about $130 each.

I'd give a serious look at Prolite.

Catching fish on a rod you built is certainly rewarding! Messing with intricate patterns and threadwork can be frustrating though. These are going to be very simple. I'm going to acid wrap the rods directionally for port/starboard and the two port ones will have green thread, two starboard orange thread.

Now I just need to find the time to actually finish them!

Glass Okumas for kings and and Cabelas Depthmaster combos for silvers. Work flawlessly. My $$ goes into the boat

I run the G-Loomis SAR1265 on my downriggers.  I also have a set of G-Loomis IMX 1174 that I use.  When I am fishing for Sockeye I am running the Lamiglas Certified Pro 902s.

Did you go with the heavy action TDR’s?

I’ve been running 4 Shimano Talora downrigger rods with Scotty’s since I bought them new in 04, along with Shimano TR-200 G’s and they still work great. I’m glad I didn’t go with the heavies.

I've used the Loomis 1086s for many years.  These used to be GL2 and are now E6X.  They are heavy, fast drift rods.  I want power in the rod, but with a fast, sensitive tip so I can see shakers.  They serve me well, although admittedly I've broken the tip out of a couple of them when high sticking trying to net my own fish.  Don't remember doing that with GL2s, but have done it with the E6Xs. Contrary to popular belief, drift rods don't just "blow up" in the downrigger.  I have thousands of hours on them and have only broken a couple tips.

If anyone has any GL2 1084 or 1086s collecting dust, let me know!

I used to love trolling with my 10.5 ft noodle rod
I’d have that sucker arced over where the tip was dang near in the water

Appreciate the input everyone!
Huntnphool, they are just mediums, but really stiff.
