Last Minute Oregon Archery Buck.
« on: October 06, 2024, 09:05:02 AM »
I found this buck when I was looking for antelope. He was in a tough spot. Lots of short grass and not a lot of topography. He was also hanging out with 10-15 does everytime I saw him, which I thought was odd. I made several stalks on him over the season and none of them worked out. I really didn't think I was going to get him.

I had to work the last weekend it was open but got off that Sunday morning. Figured I better give it one last try. It was very windy and I found him early afternoon feeding down in a draw with his does. Snuck in to about 250 yards and couldn't get any closer. Grass was 12 inches high and I had zero cover. Wind was good so I just stayed patient. He ended up bedding back down for a couple of hours. I was laying on my stomach and running out of daylight thinking I was screwed. At that point I decided to pray and I asked God to please give me an opportunity to harvest this buck. Shortly after that he stood up and started feeding again. They were coming my way! Within a few minutes him and his does were passing by at 40 yards.  I was able to sit up on my right hip and draw back without being seen. The shot actually hit farther back than I would have liked but he ran about 30 yards and tipped over right in front of me. Hallelujah!

My family will enjoy his meat and this hunt will be one I always remember. I'm grateful and know I couldn't have done it with out some help!

Gotta love those mule deer archery hunts, all eyes and no cover! Great buck considering difficulty level, good thing your prayers were answered!

I know I've said a prayer or two in the tension of the hunt...
