Goose hunting in Spokane

Recently have moved to Spokane area and I am having trouble finding fields to hunt geese, need some help being pointed in the right direction.

Recently have moved to Spokane area and I am having trouble finding fields to hunt geese, need some help being pointed in the right direction.

Very difficult area to hunt fowl.  Most areas are spoken for and need a team to hunt geese there if you can find a spot because lots of packing in mud in the dry land with steep hills.  Then the freeze comes, everything leaves.  Also geese have so much area of wheat fields and once they start landing a 1/2 mile away the hunt gets much harder or could be even over because almost impossible to complete with landing geese.  Development is causing many issues as well with less and less opportunities with more and more people moving in.  The competition among hunters is getting more fierce by the minute.

Definitely a good year so far with little to no ice over there I’m sure.

Yes, some areas of shallow ponds and sheet water are froze up but it is unusually warm and surprisingly some is open.  And the big water lakes and rivers stay open.  If you ever get a boat and start hunting Idaho I can point you to some areas for geese.

What would be the best type of boat?

How did you hunt them before you came here? Drive west of town in the afternoon and follow them to feed. Find the land owner and knock on doors. most farmers will let you hunt if you ask.  Some wont but keep trying. Lots of lakes to hunt if you are creative.

It’s no accident most keep driving west to Moses Lake or the Tri-Cities.  Unfortunately today’s waterfowl hunting in those places is only about the drive of around 300 miles round trip.

What would be the best type of boat? 

Well, for North Idaho I have run flat bottom mud boats more often than not.  Yes, there are windy days on the big water when a Mod V would be more comfortable than a flatbottom, but for what we do day in and day out I want a flat to get back into the shallow areas we often hunt.

Get it but have a good problem, work full time driving to in the dark and driving home in the dark. 

My former hunting partner played arm chair Monday morning quarterback telling me to knock on doors.  Thought he was joking because didn’t know at the time he was retaliating behind my back while he had his door knockers doing all the work for him.

I used to find them south of 190 around Sprague and Fishtrap.  There were smaller ponds that seemed to hold them, I was more interested in pheasants at the time though.

Do you work 7 days a week? If not take a day and scout. You can always traffic these local birds.
