DIY Ucluelet trip
« on: May 27, 2025, 06:10:57 PM »
Been watching lotsa videos to scratch the salmon itch til summer gets here. Ucluelet seemed to be a full service town with decent fishing opportunities. Not too far either. Anyone trailer a boat up and stayed for a few days? Logistics getting there, staying, and fishing easy?

It's been a while, but I've done that several times.  The best way I've found is to launch at Port Alberni and boat there.  I usually stayed at Poett Nook but a couple times in Ucluelet.  Of course you can drive to Ucluelet as well.  Driving to Poett Nook or Bamfield isn't a great idea, lots of bad roads.

Anyway, ferry to Nanaimo, drive to Port Alberni, boat to your spot.  Fishing can be great if you hit it right.

Be aware the cost of the ferry to Nanaimo and back is spendy. Try and get reservations well in advance.

Not Ucluelet but we go to Nootka every summer.
Similar logistics. I'd definitely boat from Alberni. We run the inside from Gold river and that country is awesome..
Depending on where your coming from PA could be easier. We take the black ball every year. It's spendy but easy.
I'd much rather boat up from CQ or Neah but custom's logistics makes it unreasonable.

Whatever ferry you take get reservations like yesterday.
They like their oversized customers..big $$$.. but don't expect to get a ferry ride as a drive up.

We do Nootka every year in July also, and take the Black Ball Ferry from PA to Victoria. We booked our ferry reservation at the beginning of March. $643 round trip with a 22’ boat.

Sooke or Port Renfrew can be good, and you can boat over.

I have fished Tofino for 25 years. A lot of the same spots are fished from Tofino and Ucluelet. I used to have my own boat but its honestly cheaper to hire a guide these days with the exchange rate where its at. The ferry and fuel is a killer and I don't have to worry about getting a slip. Its a lot less headache for me. I go up in July this year. Good luck when you go. Let us know how you do.

I fish next door in Tofino. Going back mid August. I take the boat across on the BC ferry and launch in town.  Essentially same drive as going to Ucluelet. The road takes you up and over the mountains from Nanaimo to Ucluelet. It’s a pretty good road these days, although mostly one lane both ways. Depending on the size of your boat and truck, that road may not be fun. Although my buddy does it every year with a 24’ Grady. My boat is much easier, I tow a 15’ whaler with my Tacoma.

Planning for next summer. I'd catch grief from my wife for doin a charter instead of bringing our boat. Ucluelet looks like an enjoyable town. Any of the inside towns worth going or mainland?

I have a group of friends who both boat and trailer to desolation sound every year. Inside protected waters are friendlier and more predictable. Place looks beautiful. I hope to join them when I get things settled a little ore here at home. Fishing is always good. Went to Ucluelet for many years as a kid when Oak Bay Marine Group ran it.
