MA-10 Coho

I’m going to give it a try tomorrow.  Been fishing the sound since I was a littl’un in the seventies.  It’s always been the crack of dawn for me.  Will see how it goes.

AM tides are bad for early launchers all weekend.

It was fun. Not lights out by any means, but got my two fish around the tide change.  Both a little deeper than your average morning fish, 70 and 80 on the wire. Tried shallower and only got shakers. Literally no one out there. Had Meadow and the RB Weather Buoy (and everywhere in between) to myself. Beautiful evening.

I'm hoping to launch my little 10' aluminum boat at point-no-point later this week to try trolling around that area.  Hoping the water doesn't get too rough for my little boat or I'll just be casting from shore.

Got out and killed a few in 10 this morning. First one on the first drop was literally 5 seconds after putting the rod in the holder.

A limit is all you can ask for.  We got out last night and it was worth it for the weather alone.  I believe we fished for just about three hours.  We went 3 for 4 and they were deeper.  So while we came in short of a limit two of the fish were big bucks.  So there are fish to be had in the pm.  Good luck this weekend all.  Will be after them Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Ground out 4 coho last night, nothing hot by any means. 2 on a plug, 1 on a spoon, and 1 on a herring. The shotgun surface rod with a 4oz banana and a whole herring had the most action, 5 hookups with only one landed. This year is night and day difference for me with coho. Last year we punched 20+ from august 25 to September 2nd, then pulled the boat. To date we have maybe a dozen coho. Only fishing evenings, probably two more nights and calling it for the season to focus on elk.

Our surface rod has been the hot rod this year as well.  Last night since we only could use two rods we went with conventional logic and went deep (55' to 99').  Guess I should haves stuck with what has been working and run the shallow rod.  Sundance you are right it has been a different year for sure.

I'm honestly baffled this season. Chinook has been the same, but my usual spots for coho aren't producing the same. Last year I was running a whole herring without a flasher, we absolutely murdered the coho every time we went out. Depths from 50-100, top water action, morning or evening didn't matter. My friends who fish the morning have been doing well, but the evening just haven't produced for me. I also haven't landed a coho over 8 lbs this year, last year 50% of our fish were over 10 lbs using whole herring that we jigged from the grounds.

Anecdotal, but the winning fish at the Edmonds derby was about 10 pounds.  Last year it was 13 pounds.

I've ran into more dinks this year than last for sure.  Kept a few resident sized and released a few in the 3# range.

Good year or bad year we have always done the best with flashers and hootchies down 60-100ft. Has always out fished herring in that area as well. At least for us. That’s thousands of hrs of time out there in the last 40 yrs
