Where can one find hides from hunters?
« on: November 23, 2025, 06:46:45 PM »
Hi, I am not sure where else to put this so please let me know if this should be moved. I have been told that some hunters throw out the animal's hide and just keep the meat, does anyone here do that and is willing to donate the hide to a young person who wants to try tanning? I am on the west side near Snohomish county if this helps.

Late season archery/muzzleloader left for deer, so you might get someone to donate.

If you don’t find one this year reach out a little earlier next season and I’m sure you will have more than you can handle. When I was a kid we took them to a local tannery and they would give you a free pair of buckskin work gloves in exchange. Don’t know if that is still a thing over there but I do know a lot

Sure, I will definitely try asking next season! I only became aware of the fact that a lot of people throw out hides very recently, unfortunately.

Most are probably left in the field, including mine. I’ll keep the tail for proof of species in certain areas. If someone makes it easy to drop a hide or pick it up then I would pack it out. Otherwise it’s staying in the field.

If you are just interested in tanning, start out with road kill. Deer, racoon, squirrel, skunk, etc. The smaller animals are easier to learn on and are usually quite available. That's how I started out when I was 14.

For road kill, check out Washington state game salvage on Facebook and you could have one in a day.

I fly back to New York for a month every year for deer hunting.
We throw all of the deer hides away. They use to pay $5 a hide.
Then took them for free.
Now no one wants them.
If you still want any next year i can shoip some to you.
Pm me your number and I will put in my address book for hides.

I should have a few rabbit hides in the freezer.
I raise rabbits for meat.
