Montana Trip 2007
« on: November 26, 2007, 11:21:00 PM »
Hey guys, our Montana trip was a great time and a great success.  we left Nov. 11th, and spent a few days with our rancher friends outside great falls, had a great time looking at deer and elk and antelope on private ranches and just hanging out in Big Sky Country!!!  We then got to our hunting spot in lewistown and started hunting that Wed.  Spent a lot of days looking at all the deer, mostly looking for a big whitetail , couldnt hunt the area where the most mule deer where.  wasnt accessible, but thats another story.  Pretty much looked at all the whities for about a week, and they were just warming up to the rut. most of the weather for us was warm, getting close to 60 degrees during the day. Of course the day we came home which was monday the 19th i believe it snowed 12 inches and was very cold as Dman can tell you.  Just our luck.  But Dad took a nice 3x3 whitey that he calls his jerky buck, nice big fat whitetail that wasnt running haha.  I had a could close encounters with a couple "swamp" bucks.  got to within about 10 feet from a buck, used the wind and the cattails, and creek swamp. put the sneak on a big heavy 4x3 not counting eye guards.  with dad on the ridge watching. never stood up and crawled threw the mud then bolted, never could see him until he bolted at mach 10, and didnt feel right taking the runing away shot in the brush but what a fun fun thing to do.  We had pretty much named all the deer there on the ranch, and passed on a couple young nice whitetails that were probably a little wider than my buck. but i wanted a mature buck.  this buck was hiding in the brush moving around a lot, very sneeky, and swimming the river hiding from me.  Got him about an hour before dark in the ran, caught him hiding in the cattails and brush and made a perfect one shot kill with my 257 wby mag 110 grain accubonds.  Couldnt be happier, love this buck, and the hunt me and him had over the days.  Dad and I had a blast as always, love being able to hunt with nobody around, looking at game and passing them up. Also got in a little fishing on the creek, all catch and release.  Hope you guys enjoy. thanks for reading all this.

Garrett

Congrats on the nice buck!! Would be nice to be able to hunt on a private ranch.

Congrats Garrett i was acutally in montana from the 12th to the 18th. My friend had a tag and invited me to go along with him and we were first in Darby and weren't seeing many animals and ended up going to whitefish.  Saw alot of whitetails but few things went wrong and on the last night shot a little two point haha.  Anyways good job on another nice deer.

Cool!!  Great trip Garrett....and story!!  Your buck sounds a lot like my archery buck back there....big game of cat and mouse.  :)  Congrats to you and your Dad....another successful hunt for you two.  Thanks for the pics too.
