Gun Storage in Unconditioned Space
« on: March 20, 2026, 09:51:05 PM »
Thinking about moving my safe to my shop. Anybody here keep their rifles in an unconditioned space? If so, what precautions do you take to prevent rust? I’m on the west side, so less temperature swing, but lots of humidity.

My safe is in my garage in my current house and was in my last house. Close to 20 years now. Same safe and some of the same rifles. I don’t do anything and it’s fine. No corrosion, moisture, etc issues at all. Western WA.

I have a room in my garage, unheated, I have a gun safe and ammo safe. I go to the dollar store and buy a dozen of those little moisture absorbent tubs. Put two each safe and get about four months out each one.
Going on thirty years now. Every six months I empty the safe, wipe every gun down ,swab every barrel.

So far no issues.

I use one Golden Rods in both of my safes. I’ve only had one fail in 40+ years, I check them for functioning yearly.

Easy enough. Just the damp-rid tubs?

I use the golden rods in my safes and they are in temp controlled rooms.  Never too much protection / insurance when it comes to protecting my investments.  When I lived on the west side, they worked great.  I do know some friends that had problems on the west side with surface rust.  I also knew of a guy that the bottom of his safe got rusted out sitting in his home car garage.  If I had a safe in my garage, I would have it off the floor with thin wood slats or a rubber mat.  I would still bolt it down, but wouldn't want metal in direct contact with the cement.

I may be a little paranoid though..... :chuckle: :chuckle:

 :yeah:

Concrete is permeable if it doesn’t have a vapor barrier under it and will transport moisture. I moved a safe that was sitting on concrete in a basement and it had rusted and stuck to the carpet in only about 5 years. This was in the dry side of the state.

I have used a dehumidifier rod and also a dehumidifier made by peet. Both work well but the rod puts off much more heat.

I put down some red seal on the concrete, then a barn stall mat or thick rubber gym/weight lifting mat on top of that and under the safe. Added both a golden rod and a peetz safe dryer.  Topped it off with an eva dry.  Bought a small wireless temp/humidity weather station- put the sending unit inside safe and digital screen on outside so i could see whats going on inside without opening it up.  12 years zero rust, low humidity.  Western wa, and we park multiple cars in the unheated shop, so its constantly wet/high humidity for 11 months out of 12.  Super happy with that set up.  My safe does have a rubber weather seal around the door- that prob helps a bit too.
