Morels 26
« on: March 24, 2026, 10:57:58 AM »
With the light winter we had, and seemingly warmer spring, what’s all your thoughts if shrooms will start early this year in Central WA?

PS, Asparagus is definitely coming in early

Verpa bohemica is already out. Some blondes are being harvested. I would be morchella will start popping mid April if we get some more warm days like this past week.

This rain is gonna be good for mushrooms.  We have had early springs before, and without the rain....they sucked.  We need a couple days in the mid 60's and it will be on like donkey kong.

Been finding a few, some in burns some not.  Good rain today, and give it a few weeks and it'll be great picking......if they open access to some of the burn areas

Still early in our areas

I checked a few spots ,a few weeks ago.
Didn't see a single mushroom of any kind.
I'll be farting around, getting firewood, I'll keep my eye out.
My goal every year is to find at least a skillet full,I'll post up if any come my way.

We got some good rain around my neck of the woods but I think the soil needs to warm a bit more before they pop.

I believe that's exactly what's happening here.
Seen a mushroom in my yard the other day. Any elevation gain, not seeing any mushrooms.

We all know its a weird weather year. Looked in some of normal end of May spots, still too early for the most part. Oddly we found a couple in river bottom where its colder (28* sat am), yet found a few up to 3600' in areas with lots of southern exposure. Guessing its gonna be a fairly good year for us in our non-burn areas, we'll see.

Starting to get better here too.
These came from a non burn area and are at least two weeks ahead of normal.
90* days here in Wenatchee is gonna make them dry up soon after popping, many of these were starting to dry.

Get out there and give it a go. IMO, the 5000’ areas of sugarloaf are going to be incredible once they pop. As of Sat it was still too early up there.

Little recipe I came up with.

Two clove garlic
Quarter stick butter
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon Japanese bbq sauce
Shot glass full of white vinegar.

Take mushrooms soak in water ,get bugs off.
Rinse well ,throw in frying pan with above mixture.
Cook for 5 minutes, medium heat, let mushrooms soak up.
Drain the above mixture, add a flake of butter, saute till brown Carmel color on both side of mushroom, add a shake of black pepper.

I did find another pan full ,really burned out on fried mushrooms.
Came up with this!!!
These be good on steak or burgers or stand alone.
I just ate some recently and was blown away.
Very good ,might not eat fried again.

Happy hunting..
Wife did help with recipe.
Keep finding morels,but no sheds , 😡

Thanks Pman! It actually took quite a bit of work, especially for the burn ones to figure out a spot that somebody hasn’t already picked. I don’t know if we’ll go back there (tons of littles still popping) because we enjoy the hunt for the naturals much more than the easy money burns.
We also found some really prime condition boletes, queens i believe.

Not only are burns easy money, they're less susceptible to bugs. Stick with them!

We had a good day today and found a couple lbs of nice morels.  Cooked some up tonight and was reminded why I need to go find some more.

I'm not a mushroom eater, but can't remember ever seeing a cluster this big so I snapped a picture.

I've only ever found them in burns. For you guys finding them elsewhere in consistent spots, do you have a plan or escouting to target likely areas? I think about my chantrelle spots and I fpund them all randomly while looking for elk or blacktail. Are your morel finds random or do you have a method?

Like hunting...... boots and miles.

They like certain trees and bushes, and fairly open ground cover/not inches deep of pine needles.
The entire Colockum area has morels everywhere I've ever looked, ya just got to have the right timing, and cover ground till ya find them. Every year its a bit different

I found them shed hunting, getting firewood, all kinds of stuff.
After you find a few,you can drive the roads real slow, look in the ditch,on the banks.
Catch a frying pan full.
Look for shaded areas, moist areas, after a rain ,find other mushrooms, morels are hiding somewhere.near there.

If ya want some Dale, hit me up, I can mail you some dehydrated ones. We are going to have an epic year here. This is 2nd load from weekend trip, and we haven’t even been able to pick our good spot yet.

Wow, what a fantastically generous offer. Thank You!

They are so delicious I would feel guilty taking them and fortunately we recently found some ourselves that we sliced, cooked in butter, and used on some fantastic mushroom beef hamburgers. We just had some more rains so I'm hoping to find some more soon. Thanks again for such a great offer!
