Hmm I think I have only killed one and it was a solid 12.  Best part was that I killed him with a hunting buddy.  Spotted him 250 yards away in the timber and called him in with a cow call.  30 yard frontal and he was dead in 20 seconds.

Ten spikes... Biggest I have here is a 20"... Biggest I ever got is a 26" at my parents house... Should be 12 spikes... Lost 2 because of Power Belt bullets not penetrating... One was a huge spike... Massive, sweeping wide, over 3 footer tall... Jumped him outta his bed right before dark... He wasn't a yearling bull... Huge bed in the snow with a little muscle blood... My dad and I came back in the morning... Picked the track back up and he bedded jumped him again after a few miles and this time he ran through blow downs uphill like nothing was wrong... A little blood in that bed... Still got some of them junk bullets thrown in a box somewhere...
I love you... I really do...

My biggest is about 16 to 18 inches.

In the early 80s I was hauling a load of logs down 3 mile hill on the 2500 towards Weycos Camp Baker. We'll, what was left of it. About half way down I saw a dandy Sabre spike with horns well over 3' long. Cross the road in front of me.

I saw another 1 outside of Toledo during rifle season when you could still hunt spikes. I found him in a patch of timber and took what should have been an easy shot. Missed clean. I followed it for quite aways when it crossed a main rd. I knew of an old railroad grade that it would cross if it kept going. I got out to the road and was trying to figure out how I was going to get back to the grade. Within minutes a friend just happened to drive by. He gave me a ride out to the grade and as we were getting to where I thought he would cross he stuck his head out of the brush into the grade. I got out and caught him in the middle of the grade broadside. Took an easy 100 yard broadside shot and watched in amazement as it finished crossing the grade and up into the timber untouched. My heart sunk knowing I missed that bull twice on easy shots. Later on I was checking my sites and found the crosshair in the scope had broke. It was a cheap scope my father in law gave me and I felt obligated to put it on my rifle. Learned a hard lesson there!
He was also an easy 3'. Both had beautiful dark heavy horns with long polished ivory tips. Incredible animals!

I don’t remember exactly what they measured, but I think it was 24” for the left side and 23” on the right. Killed on the opening day of 2024 archery season. It was already 90 degrees.

Yeah it’s almost touching at the tips. Pretty cold to see the difference in the way these spikes grow.

About 20 years ago a good buddy of mine shot a spike on opening day of the archery season.  Looked like a good shot, so he walked back to camp for breakfast.  "It's kind of a funny looking spike" he told us.  After breakfast we all went to go track his bull.  We found it a few yards from where he shot it.  It was easily the biggest bull elk any of us had ever seen.  A huge, ancient bull that had apparently regressed "back to a spike".  It had one antler that looked like a baseball bat bent in an L shape.  The other side was a single, long, curved spike over 3 feet long.  Somewhere I have a picture of PathfinderJR (who was about 7 or 8 ) standing next to the head and that antler is as long as he is tall.  If you saw it's tracks, you would honestly think they were left by a moose.  If I find the pics of it I'll come back on and post, but they're not on my work computer (I looked).

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

That is SWEET!!  id shoot that in a heartbeat day 1 even with an any/branch permit.  Love me some odd ones

Had to go measure.  Interesting.....18-18-19-20-20-20-20-22-22-24.
What I'm curious about is what's your shortest spike? I See 5'-8" ones every year on cams and while hunting but have never had a chance to shoot 1.

Sweet bull. My BIL had a quality tag in the blues 10 or 12 years ago and passed on a big spike x 6 multiple days in a row. Unfortunately it didn't dawn on him to let somebody with a spike tag (me) know until after he got home  :chuckle:

Both of mine are 23” on the left and 25” on the right. The skull was a cow that started to grow a point. Probably had too much Roundup.

My first and only spike.  November 1993, 3 days before my 13th birthday.  My Grandpa and I went out that morning behind his property and caught a herd on the edge of.a.clearcut.  3 rounds from my Winchester model 100 carbine 308 later and I had my first elk and a memory I'll never forget
