Blackhorn 209 alternative
« on: May 20, 2026, 09:33:00 AM »
While I like blackhorn alot it's being expensive and hard to find is getting old. I tried 777 fffg over the weekend and got decent velocity, so so accuracy, and a bad case of "crud ring". For the ones  that have dabbled in such things was pyrodex rs less prone to crud rings or any more accurate then 777 in your setups. I'm shooting a cva optima v2 with w209 primers and a 300 grain deep curl wrapped in a harvester crush rib sabot.

Give me a holler if you want to buy some BH209.  I've got some extra jugs I keep in my humidified safe.  I'm in Yelm
Yes it is expensive, I get it.

I shoot 777 loose in ffg, fffg, pellets, Pyrodex pellets, and real black powder ffg... I don't have a chronograph so I know nothing about that...

Got a Hawkin with Maxiball 370's and cast replica's with 110gr of ff black powder or lose 777 ffg or fffg... Hits in the same spots... Always dirty as hell... Kick's like a mule... With a 209 ignition though... Dead center 50 yard shots...

Knight Wolverine likes 150gr of Pyrodex pellets and a 300gr Hornady Mono Flex... Drives them dead center... With a Traditions scope at 50 yards 3" high... With a 209... Easiest gun to clean... It's stainless though... Don't know if that makes it easier...

Winchester X-150 is set up with 130gr of Pyrodex pellets and pushing a 385gr Hornady Great Plains with fiber optics... And gets 3" groups at 50 yards... With a 209... I plan on setting it up with a scope and changing loads this year though... Not bad to clean...

I've shot loose out of the X-150 for a while too... And killed quite a few animals... You'll get your best accuracy 80-90gr... I've tried all kinds of stuff... If you hit them in the lungs and heart... They're dead... I plan on accidently hitting a shoulder and load to my max comfortability... (there isn't one with the Hawken for me so I just go for it, that gun hurts to look at) And accuracy... Now for the for BH209 I've never used it... So I don't know the benefits to compare... When Pyrodex pellets and 777 loose came out I bought more than I could use in a timely fashion and am pot committed for a while longer... May need more 30 grainers soon...
I love you... I really do...

When you say 80-90 grains do talking by volume or weight?

With my Optima the first time using it I was using 777 pellets and CCI ML primers. I had the crud ring and hard loading after a couple of shots. I tried white hots but did not like them. I went back to the 777 pellets using the Win 777 primers and it seems to shoot much cleaner. I am switching to loose 777 and am very happy with it.

I’ve had great luck with loose 777.
