Stupid stupid people
« on: July 28, 2009, 05:28:26 PM »
I took some guys out from here on sat for a day of fishing, it was very slow as we all heard, the best part of the trip was the guy on the bank, never in 18 years of running a boat and bank fishing have I ever seen anything quite like this. I dropped my anchor before any bank guys were around, made sure to use only about 50ft of line so that there would be as much room as possible for all of us to fish, bank and boat alike, then ran back to the launch to pick my guys up. I run back and start to tie off to my bouy and this guy on the bank starts yelling F bommbs at me and throwing rocks my way, keep in mind they were fishing way above my boat and I was not in their way at all...... he says I am in the best spot on the bank, not true I say, I told him I grew up fishing the bank here and I have never had a issue hooking fish on any part of it... he then kept cussing and eventually sat down. Later another boat comes in and anchors outside of me, the guy loses it and starts cussing again, the other boat asks him if he has anything better to do then be a *censored* and he just keeps going, again with the rocks etc....... well he really gets mad and then casts a 6 oz lead over my boat trying to snag my lines, from a act from god I remained cool and just cut his line, he  retied and did it again, same thing, then he tries for a 3rd time and snaps his line from a backlash........ I then decided to call the cops, they came down and had a long talk with him and he shut up the rest of the day....... the nerve of some people!!!!

Why did you wait to call the cops? I think I would have done that early on. Take a photo and dial...before the guy gets even more frustrated. Tossing rocks and gear at you is an attempted assault...

sorta takes the fun away......

one time I took my oldest daughter duck hunting for the first time at the potholes with a friend who happened to be a duck guide. Before light there was lots of activity around the area....as it got light turns out someone else was set up about 200 yards away and they were in competition calling at the ducks we were calling. My friend was pretty good on the call and ducks were coming to us but before they were within range the other guys would shoot way across just to keep us from getting any. After a while we just left.

I know how you felt....

Forget the attempt.  That's assault.  Probably felony too.  Assault is the reasonable apprehension of harm.  One need not actually connect for it to be assault.  Honestly, while it's a good idea I would have never thought of calling the cops in that situation.  I probably would have done something more sinister...

Depending on the facts and circumstances (ie, size of rocks, distance from thrower), its 'deadly force...'  :guns:

Heck Yea, Spray away------he has a big outboard jet too, elevate it a bit and instant FIRE HOSE that will probably shoot further than the guy could throw...  Of course with this heat might have refreshed him.... :chuckle:  We used to mess around when it got cooking in AK, and would have water stream battles with other jet boats to cool off each other...  My old 115 would shoot a 60 foot stream.  Can't rasie my Thunderjet or I am sure I'd have one heck of a good stream ability.  I think Hoyt has a 225 or something, holly crap...  :yike:

Take a 454 Chevy powered Berkeley Jet with a Place diverter...I can wash bridges...I've roosted occasional agravating a$$holes...esp the ones on lake lice (PWCs) who insist on using running jets as slalom pylons.  Also done it to a guy who didnt like us running on the river and was tossing pieces of 2x4 scrap and rope trimmings in the water hoping we would suck some into the jet, knocked him off the bank.

Might I suggest keeping a catcher's mitt in your boat?  It would be fun to catch those rocks while sitting around waiting for the rods to get some action.  Oh, and have a pair of scissors handy for a quick snip of the line after catching the 6 oz. lead weights.  Don't forget to tell him "thanks, I was running low on those". :chuckle:

Oh, and yes, this would be a good topic in which to hear the other side of the story. ;)

Hmm.... I'm kinda torn with this one.

Being a bank fisher, I have noticed that some guys with boats are a$$holes. I believe in first come, first entitled.

Putting a buoy with anchor in place doesn't save the spot for you in my book.

If a bank fisher is capable of casting normal fishing lure/bait a distance, then the boater should yeild position. There's a whole lot more places a boater can get to. Advantage=boater.

That said, if a bank fisher is spin casting or plunking, the boater should be allowed to drift through. This shares the same hole with everyone involved.

If I come to a spot and a boat is already anchored within my casting range, I will not set up to fish. It's not the boat size on the water. That anchor line is also taking up bait drifting space. That anchor line can also be a hazard with fighting a fish from shore.

I think every situation needs to be analized to make sure all involved have fair opportunity to fish the location.

I tell ya, If I'm on the bank, and a boat fisher pulls right up and drops anchor right where I've been casting. I'm gonna be pissed!

Think about the days before you bought a boat. Were you a bank fisherman? Did anyone in a boat ever push your buttons? I don't condone the actions of this fisherman at all, but from your information, He may have had reason to be upset. I personally would have told you that I'm going to keep casting where I was. If one cast goes a bit long. SoBeIt. I won't try to hit you, but you might want to pay attention and not get a hook in your ear.

Last year on the Skagit above Rockport, my son and I were fishing spinners from the bank when two drift boats came down. We paused our casts while the first came through. He anchored just below us. The other anchored just above us. Both limited our casts and drifts just a bit. We casted more, that's all. Eventually they left. We all fished the same hole without incident.

I guess this could probably be argued both ways....wouldn't it be easier on both parties if one party just yielded to the other and moved....there's lots of fish in the water.....this confrontational mentality is the same that causes road rage....

---Ya the buoy save your spot thing don't work on the Columbia! If your fisherman cant get up with you then you better not try to hog the best hole on the river. That's why I don't guide in some of my favorite spots because I cant get a crew ready at 2am and If I set anchor and went to get fishermen that couldn't get up I would expect to get my ass chewed out!

First off there is no other side to this, its exactly what it was, I was there first, anchored with a very short rope ( 45 ft) and made sure to give enough room for everyone to fish, the bank is over 200 yrds long, I have caught fish on every rock on it, the 60 ft I took up with my anchor and boat was no different then other bank guys fishing that spot on the bank... thre is no reason we all cant fish it, and as I said I grew up fishing from the bank, if a boat was anchored in close before I got there I just moved up or down, got my fish and went home, easy as that..no reason or need to say anything, let alone toss gear at a boat, a guide boat at that....... if I did not have my name all over my boat and clients you can better believe this would have ended a little different......... he was in the wrong, he was a ashole, case closed

Again. I don't condone this guys actions. I'm not trying to start something. I actually wish I would have been one to take you up on your very generous offer.

Please read above... First come, first entitled. -The key with me is that you used a buoy to hold your anchoring position, left, then came back.

"If I come to a spot and a boat is already anchored within my casting range, I will not set up to fish."  I think most bank fishers will do the same.

Someday I'm going to buy a paintball gun and put in my boat. For the seagulls and for the bank magots who need to learn some respect as well as the guys who run over my line when side drifting or pulling plugs.

I'm sure haveing paying clients sitting and watchign yer every moved helped keep yer cool. I know I am a really mellow guy but when I have others with me it would help me be the bigger man. I had a situation one time with another boater. My buddy thought I was going to kill the guy. I would have had he gotten into my boat. I had the 12" fillet knife at my finger tips if he would have made one step. I was in the wrong and knew it and tried to say I was sorry. He would not let it go and kept going on and wanted in my boat. LOL I ended up fishing in another spot to just avoid the bloody mess in my boat.

this guy on the bank starts yelling F bommbs at me and throwing rocks my way,

Been there done that years ago, except the guy was able to land a couple of rocks in the boat. When the crack of the .22 Mag went off those 2 guys were running and screaming like little school girls. Long story short the Sherrif was at the ramp, guess the drunk screamin babies were scared of getting shot. It went to court and the judge picked up the rock that was in the boat that day and the .22 Mag. pistol. The judge asked about being a bad shot, see guys the rock carried the same weight in the courts as the gun did. Since it was self defense that day the case was tossed out of court and the pistol was returned.

Take a gun next time and kill anyone who gives you lip. Works for me in most situations.

You should have just invited him on the boat. I have made a couple new friends like that. Bitching and whining up a storm on the bank get them out in the boat and they are actually nice people.
