.338 win mag or .300 ultra mag

If you want to shoot long range the 338 is not even in the same league as the 300 RUM. The 338 is good for big heavy game, otherwise the 300 RUM will out perform in every aspect.

.338 win. Theres only 2" diff at 500 with both shooting a 180gr the .338 falls behind with the lower BC but thats y u shot a .225gr accubond

I have a 338 and two 300 win mags and had a 300RUM but just look and compare on long range.

i'm trying to decide which caliber i should buy in my new rifle. i no both are good calibers but i'd like somethin thats pretty flat shooting & has long range knock down power. what do you guys think i should get?

7mm RUM

Less recoil than the 30 cal or bigger guns, but look at the ballistics.  If you want a flat shooting big game round---  This is it!

I get 3600 fps out of mine  150 grain bullet

3" high at 100
14" low at 500.

Pretty impressive to hold hair to 500 yards. 

And check out the long range knock down.

what are you hunting? if your hunting elk at 500yds then the choice is obvious. if your hunting deer or lopes at 500yds then the same is true, duh. maybe you wanna shoot competition br at 500-1000yds? who knows? you really could use either caliber for these situaitons but i wouldn't consider it ideal and if you're gonna do it, why not do it right? questions like this always frustrate me. there are so many variables to consider when choosing a caliber, do some research that pertains to what your primary purpose of this rifle is going to be instead of asking for advise while providing little insight on what your trying to achieve. if you want something thats shoots flat a long ways out i could recommend some 1000yd benchrest wildcat calibers that will out perform either of those, or you could get a 50bmg and be done with it.

I had one of each. Ended up selling the .338 and never looked back. The .300 ultra mag is a great round. I hunt wide open land in eastern washington, Montana and hopefully Wyoming and the .300 ultra mag is a better round out there. ( my opinion )

unless you plan on going to AK I would pick the 300 win mag. Cheaper ammo and more than does the job. I have a 338 RUM and I hate to say it its a little over kill.

Another thing to consider is availability of ammo.  Lets be honest, the 300RUM has become fairly popular, but pull into Grangeville, ID sometime and see if you can reliably find a box off ammo when you left yours at home 450 miles away.  Lot better chance you'll find the 338win mag in out of the way places than you will find the 300RUM.  I have neither caliber, but have shot both and if I was to buy one it would be the 338win mag.
