10yr old daughters first deer.
« on: October 27, 2009, 12:12:43 PM »
Well first off I’d like to start by saying hi to everyone here.

My daughter decided she wanted to get her deer this year.  I wasn't sure if she was old enough, but told her if she passed hunter safety that I would buy her a rifle.  Well she passed her hunter safety course only missing 4.  So I bought her a weatherby 7mm-08 and told her she had to shoot it well enough to be able to get a deer.  She had been practicing out to 200yds with about a 2" group.  We decided that would be her max shot this year.

So the first 4 days of the hunt never presented the right opportunity for her to get a good shot.  We saw lots of deer and quite a few legal bucks, but things just didn't pan out.

We went back over for the last weekend of the season.  Got out of the truck about 6:35 since it's a little under a mile back to where I wanted to start hunting.  First thing we see a group of about 25 deer with 2 nice bucks in it about 1000 yards away.  Well the main group head over the hill but the 2 bucks and a doe start heading our way.  So we sneak down a draw about 100yds and get to where I think she might be able to get a shot.  The deer started moving parallel to us at about 500yds so I knew we had to move to intercept them.  As soon as the deer went behind a hill we pick up our stuff and start moving to get in front of them.  We got about 200yds down into a little draw and we start stalking up to where I think they are going to come out.  I just happened to glance off to my right and could see antler tips coming over the hill.  We get Steph all set up and I get my rangefinder out.  The deer crested the hill at 200yds exactly and never saw us.  So I tell Steph that as soon as the biggest buck which was the first deer stopped he would be in range.  He finally stopped and looked back at the other deer at 168yds.  She waited for him to stop and even for him to move his front leg forward and pulled the trigger.  He dropped in his tracks.  She made a perfect shot.
I'm not sure who was more excited Steph or me.  I'm one proud papa.

Congrats to you and your daughter, she got a Dandy!
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.
